I totally agree. I think Billy wanted to solidify the come back with a really concise album without too much prog weirdness or folky meandering. I think it's a big success and punches me in the face as hard as Gish did.

I'm feeling a lot more heavy rock off this album than I expected. A few songs maybe but describing it as pop sounding by pumpkins hasnt crossed my mind.

I'll think about that when I listen through it again.

it is so POP...i think it has a lot to do with the mega-tight compositions and delivery of the songs...the damn album just never shuts up...its so fast/quick...

You could get at least 9 of Zeitgeist's songs on the radio.

Zeitgeist is not pop damn you. MCIS has the most pop-like elements of any pumpkins album.

Siamese Dream is really quite poppy in it's own way, too. Let's not forget that.

We were told the album up through United States was "heavy," and it is.

I agree with Pete. I wouldn't consider Bleeding the Orchid, That's the Way or Starz heavy.

I wouldn't say any of those are light either. Light for the Pumpkins is 33, With Every Light, Cupid, To Forgive, most of Adore, etc.

Would have to agree. But I don't think that holds it down, at all. Infact this is probably the best move Corgan could make to get back into the mainstream world. Gossamer proves that there is still plenty of dynamic energy left within The Pumpkins. Some of the Synth edge explored here also shows a new step or more refined atleast anyway. Also the vocal approach is just another notch under the Pumpkins belt. I honestly think there will be another album, and it will be more explorative and experimental. This is a fine album in my opinion, and should maintain a fair amount of recognition for the rest of the year.

I think Siamese Dream is the poppiest of SP records; even Machina is poppier is Zeitgeist.

Pop / non-pop do not cancel out, learn your poponomics. But yeah MCIS has happier songs like Lily, Beautiful, and 1979. Songs that you can genuinely call pop-like at times. I just don't see that with Zeitgeist. Name me the songs that seem pop-like to you.

mcis sd and zeitgeist are sps more poppier albums, but even then, its just a few songs. zeitgeist has 4, imo, thats the way, tarantula, bring the light, and come on

I guess the best examples would be the chorus in Bring the Light or That's the Way. It's predictable in an Oasis sort of way. One of my friends recently said "repeating some words over and over again is so Corgan-style songwriting" and if you look at the last 7 years or so I had to agree. It was never like that back in the old days. I always thought nobody can write songs like Billy, but that's not necessarily true anymore. Another friend of mine asked me how I liked the album and when I said it's pretty good, he just went: "Well, pretty good doesn't really do them justice...the standard used to be groundbreaking." And he's not even a fan.

yeah this is kind of true. i think this and adore are both really pop. only zeitgeist is pop for my chemical romance fans and adore is basically adult contemporary

You don't hear the condensed/safe side of this record? Sure their other albums have had alot of that as well but most of this album is hooks and un-adventure. Siamese dream would be a pretty close second in my opinion but that doesn't make either album bad at all. It's all about being open minded, and having a clean perspective. But sure if it's that side of things that turn people off I can understand to.

Sorry if your question was aimed at Phoenix but my list is:

Doomsday Clock
That's The Way
Tarantula
Starz
Neverlost
Bring The Light
Come On

That's at the least I guess. I can see Mellon Collie is also filled with a lot as well if I was using my definition of pop but I think on either disc there is enough angst and variation to put it behind this and SD at least.

I do have to say I hate it when Billy gets too repetitive, and that's marked his work since the beginning (rhinoceros anyone), but he has so much awesome totally non repetitive stuff like Cupid de Locke, I dunno. Either way he's still writing some good lyrics amidst generic ones.

I was just listening to bring the light, the chorus doesn't seem expected at all to me, but maybe that's only in the context of the pumpkins. I'm still not seeing poppishness
