I'm of the mind that it probably wasn't a "proper" Crippler Crossface, because it would be hard for a full grown man to apply it to a kid. And I don't think suffocation is really what the move is meant to accomplish anyway. If the kid's neck or shoulder was broken, then I could see this Crossface talk being more legit.

With all the time Benoit spent training in Stu Hart's "dungeon," I'd bet he picked up all sorts of shoot holds that could suffocate someone much easier than a Crippler Crossface would. The idea of using a wrestling hold to kill someone sounds nuts in and of itself, but maybe he just did so because he had training in that area and thus thought it was a better bet to keep things quick and painless. It makes sense in a twisted way. If someone knows a way to properly apply something like a sleeperhold so that it cuts off oxygen to the brain, why wouldn't they use that instead of something as potentially messy as smothering someone with a pillow or bag?

This is all true.

But at the same time - fuck it's funny thinking about wrestlers learning moves that are actually real/actually work.

my bro and i use to wrestle when we were younger. i executed the figure 4 like no one's business, i also enjoyed using the sharpshooter because bret hart has always been my favorite wrestler.

you could snap someones shit in two with a sharpshooter if you lean back hard while giving it. Figure 4 reversed into sharpshooter is sick. I think Flare/Bret Hart did that once?

sharpshooter was painful as hell, i wonder if i could still remember how to do it.

They're becoming few and far between these days, but there are a few guys out there- shooters- who really could cripple you with a wide variety of different holds. Stu Hart was one, so you can bet Chris Benoit knew a few, and only the ones Stu wanted Benoit to know.

One of the methods in the wrestling business used to humble an outspoken newcomer is to put the offender in the ring with a wrestler known for being "stiff" with their punches, kicks and holds. They punish you in that ring. If this were an earlier time and the audience wasn't so accustomed to fast-paced action all of the time, you can bet that that misbehaving wrestler would get "stretched", too- repeatedly put in excrutiatingly painful submission holds over and over. Good times.
