So I guess I shouldn't read the news either.

they change their setlist around more than 90% of the bands out there and still people complain... jeez... hummer is worth the price of admission alone...

Just got back. I feel privileged that I was there tonight but have to admit I felt it was a good gig but not great. As far as Billy is concerned he's playing a new country and these people haven't seen the show yet (or heard the bootlegs) so you can understand him playing a similar set, but for me personally it started to get tiresome half way through. At least mix up the fucking acoustic section a bit! Saw Pearl Jam last night and have to say that although they are second best to the pumpkins in my book they certainly crammed in a lot more excitement and unpredictability into their two hour set than the pumpkins managed in 3 tonight.

Highlights tonight for me were: shame (this version I'm really starting to love), Hummer, Silverfuck, Orchid, Zero, tonight tonight, Cherub Rock and Muzzle.

And I half-missed the comment he made about being the end of the European tour. Did he say something about returning now to their fucked up country to beat their audiences or something?

I was fucking blown away!

Highlights: Shame (We all know how good this is), Stars, Silverfuck (stupendous), Gossamer, Rocket, Tonight Tonight, Untitled (surprisingly good), Neverlost (Really love this song now) , Tarantula, Muzzle.

Lowlights were GATGC, 33 and Winterlong - These were good but everyting else was great.

Crowd were really into it, loads of chanting and a fierce mosh. Billy was on good form, throwing shapes. He didn't speak much but mentioned going back to his fucked up country!

Thanks to million watts for sorting my friends out.

amazing show. first time since '98 for me and a return to form. yes, the setlist was predictable, but during the first hour it was just thrilling to see the band perform again. goosebumps during the first chords of today.

some comments; too late now for a proper review:
-home was on the setlist as an opener to the first encore (before gossamer), but it was not played
-highlights for me were today to lucky 13 and cherub rock and muzzle.
-i didn't like silverfuck in its new arrangement. it was great to hear that riff again, but i was just longing for some jams similar to 94 or 96
-the audience loved it. very strong applause all the time and a huge pit on the floor.
-overall, this is light years better than almost all bands out there at the moment.
-at the end billy said something like they will return to their fucked up country to shock their audience, as london knows after tonight. they are gonna beat them repeatedly and they are going to beat them into oblivion

Everyone uses pearl jam as a example. Most bands have a set list that doesnt change. It doesnt help, that the pumpkins have new members.

True, and I still had a very enjoyable show (and a great view from level 1). I suppose we've become so spoiled by bootlegs that sometimes that takes a little away from actually seeing a performance live. Crowds reaction around where I was seemed really good, although I saw a few people leaving and some falling asleep during gossamer

I mean the pumpkins could really have some varied set lists if they played their usual 20-22 song sets. Then you can definately get alot of mix mash there.

as for pearl jam at wembley on monday. i skipped that one because i was just too busy, and i am proper skint at the moment. would have been my first pj show; i guess i'm only a casual fan. i did follow the setlist thread on their forum and i have to admit i didn't feel i missed out. the review in one of the free london papers (i am aware of the dodgy source here) only gave it 2 out of five stars. their reviewer also noted that the show worked for the hardcore fans only. i guess that is the downside of too much set rotation for bands with a mass appeal like sp or pj.

Just back.

Many lies were burnt tonight. Almost all of mine were burnt clean off my soul. More lies would have been burnt had there been some "new" stuff in the setlist, but 28 songs and three hours of Pumpkins is sufficient for a burning of all but the most stubborn lies.

Very few lies were burnt during the slower new songs, the sound wasn't that hot and you could barely hear Billy's vox. No lies whatsoever were burnt during Lucky 13. Briefly, during the 10 minute meltdown section of Gossammer, some lies were re-burnt back on to my soul through sheer boredom. If I wanted that shit I'd buy some Bald on Asian gay porn.

Away from the lies, there was a beautiful moment when Jeff first came on stage and caught his cape on something. He gave it a couple of tugs and looked sort of sheepish. So would I if I was wearing a cape. I was stood right in front of him throughout and enjoyed watching him, especially how he seemed to look to Bill for approval after a solo.

Seriously, would it kill Billy to look like he's at least vaguely enjoying himself? For 90% of the time he was plain gloomy. It was great at the end when he finally spoke to the crowd (beyond a couple of "thanks"s earlier on), it does seem a bit arse-y that they're playing for the first time in 7 years and there's so little interaction with their audience.

Oh well, enjoyed it tremendously and hope they shake up the set back in America. Fingers crossed they'll have some different stuff in rotation in time for Reading. Surely. Surely?

wait to see the setlist near the end of their touring for this album... the pumpkins have a history of playing increasangly amazing setlists... even in the machina tour, the second semester concerts were fantastic.

it was a good show, better than paris at least.. they'd worked out some of the kinks over the past month, which is a good thing. nice to hear lucky 13 for the first time live.. however, i was underwhelmed by 'god + country' for the second time, and 'neverlost'.. also, 'gossamer' is starting to kill me. it's a drug song... at least, all the fucking noodling is for potheads.

silverfuck, untitled, and glass were highlights.. nice new arrangements. and zero.. i had the living shit kicked out of me in the pit during that one. english people are yobs.

well then why didn't that happen with the 17-19 song festival sets?

and most bands nearly 20 years old with more than 7 albums worth of released material do change their sets. it's only stupid reunion tours like pixies and pumpkins that don't.

Well Depeche Mode doesnt, for one. I don't really have any experience with other bands that have been together for 20 years.

Too tired to post properly and I'm off to Glastonbury tomorrow but briefly -

* Highlights were Hummer, Rocket, 33, Silverfuck, Muzzle (so much better when you see it live)
* Gossamer's middle part dragged on for too long with too many high pitched bits that seemed too piercing, but it redeemed itself at the end. The middle needs more dynamics than just the same delayed notes/pick scraping etc.
* Ginger I like a lot, Jeff is growing on me and growing in confidence despite the silly clothes. Lisa has no stage presence and is very much in the background. There was a really cool bit in the Silverfuck end jam where Billy and Jeff were playing the same note w/bend together that sounded great. Hard to describe, if a boot comes out you'll hear it on that.
* The clothes aren't too bad when the gowns and cloaks are removed. You can sort of apprieciate the aesthetic Billy is going for at that point.
* I sort of wish I hadn't downloaded the other boots as there weren't really any surprises. Still, Rocket and 33 nearly made me cry a little and I'm a fully grown man, so what more can be said. These are rather minor quibbles, it was a great show and the audience seemed to love it.

Also they were giving out stickers of the flag before the show. The Paris Tarantula cover is on the back, plus yellow, green, red and purple album covers. So I don't think there will be anymore than that.

I'd say I'm 90% lie free anyway. Perhaps Glastonbury will finish off the remaining 10%. Then I'll have to work on getting some more to have them burnt off all over again at Reading. I'm going to make some cheese on toast and go to bed now anyway. Adieu Netphoria!
