Default Tarantula=The Strokes?

So I was sitting around listening to Tarantula today, and I kept hearing a different vocal line than what Billy was singing in my head. So I let it rest for awhile and then a couple hours later it dawned on me - Tarantula (vocals aside) sounds a whole lot like Heart in a Cage off the Strokes First Impressions of Earth.

Seriously, try it out. Listen to them back to back.

And.... WTF?

I think it's extremely arguable that songs in the same key will sound the same, but regardless, it marks the first experience I've ever had of something the Pumpkins doing reminding me of something else that's era wise nearly concurrent.

i heard a radio guy here in LA say something along the lines of tarantula sounds a lot like some AFI song, i think its because the main riff is like a basic rock riff

miss murder was probably the song but tarantula is a considerably better song and the only similarities are in the styles of playing in tarantula (the chopped up chugging verse, the main riff that sounds like a buzz saw) which is basically being used in tons of rock music songs by bands like those these days.

the whole 6/8 triplet feel is present in both of these songs.. so there's your similarity..

I just wasn't expecting to hear something from the Pumpkins that I feel like I've heard before.

As disappointed as I was by like... Machina (initially), at least it all sounded like nothing else out there.

Gish sounded like Jane's Addiction. Siamese Dream sounded like My Bloody Valentine. Mellon Collie sounded like [mumbles]. Adore sounded like Aphex Twin. MACHINA sounded like Mountain.

to sum up, your memory is clearly flawed.

Actually, I think it's 12/8.
And the songs aren't all that similar, really.

It's 4/4 drums with guitar triplets that makes it seem like one of the romping time sigs.

Here's my contention though - I guess Gish sounded like Jane's addiction, but I would agree more in music production than straight up song structure.

More or less the same deal with siamese dream and my bloody valentine - same guitar engineer so they had similar loop effects, but the actual songs were structured really differently.

And disarm has the same chords as Zombie by the Cranberries, but no one would get the same feeling from both.

Adore doesn't sound like much aphex twin I've ever heard.

And I don't know who Mountain is (my own fault).

So I would still consider it a new experience, tcm! Though I shall listen to Mountain real quick and edit if you're totally right and i'm wrong (though I somehow doubt it).
