Even taken out of context, one should be able to fill in the blanks and realize that they were questioning whether or not the major crime of leaking an undercover CIA agent was committed. You're reaching if you think they were trying to say Libby's perjury and obstruction weren't crimes.

Poll: McCain, Clinton top SC, Edwards falters

Arizona Sen. John McCain may have lost his lead nationally to former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, but he remains first in the hearts of his South Carolina countrymen.

New Hampshire-based American Research Group’s Feb. 23-27 poll showed McCain at 35 percent among likely GOP presidential primary voters to Giuliani’s 28 percent. The survey of 600 respondents had a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Among Democrats, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton led Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, 36-25 percent. Seneca native and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards had 20 percent, an 11-point drop from December’s poll. An assortment of announced and unofficial candidates scored from 1 to 2 percent, including Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden, 2 percent; and Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, 1 percent each.

The Democratic poll was taken after Obama’s and Clinton’s mid-February visits to South Carolina’s Democratic heartland.

In ARG's separate head-to-head match-up of McCain and Clinton it was a 52-32 McCain rout. The poll of 1,200 likely primary voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

For second-tier and lower Republicans, the poll wasn’t good news.

The biggest decline hit un-candidate New Gingrich, the former U.S. House speaker who dropped to 10 points from 15, possibly as it sunk in on his adherents that his actual candidacy is increasingly unlikely.

The numbers suggested that hardcore conservatives are still looking for a candidate, heading to little-known third-tier contenders or back into the undecided column.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney remained mired in the mid-single digits, registering 5 percent, the same as in December. Coming in at 1 percent were former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, U.S. Reps. Duncan Hunter of California and Tom Tancredo of Colorado

But the latter three showed gains from the December poll.

Undecideds accounted for 14 percent among Democrats, down a point from December, and 18 percent for Republicans, up 2 points.

Edwards' campaign goes on despite return of wife's cancer
