they wrote one of the best songs of 2006 and the rest of the album is nowhere near that level but its still the best, catchiest pop-punk album made in a long time and i enjoy the occasions where they actually get heavy

also they're from new jersey

re: "living makes me sick, so sick i wish i'd die", that line made me cringe in 1995 and it does today

Yes ok, that is quite cringeworthy, but that line isnt the centre theme of that song.

I don't see how the music of these bands reflect each other even at their very core. MCR has found their niche in teen punk music crafted for background noise of party scenes in teen movies. That is not anywhere near Billy Corgan's vision for music. Psychedelia, grunge, metal, new wave, shoegazer, cyber-metal, soft rock, pop, but never did punk rear its head in the Pumpkins (with maybe the slight exceptions of Marquis in Spades, Glass Theme).

The only similarities I see is a slight resemblance in frontmen, styling in music videos, and a penchant for writing grandiose lyrics.

By the way, what father wants their son to be the saviour of the broken and the damned? I reckon you get your ass kicked saying stuff like that.

hey everybody, lets all take some more lyrics out of context and talk about how juvenile they are. because you can't do that with the beatles or bob dylan. the irony isn't quite as funny.

MCR has always reminded me of SP. They're vaugely gothy. They appeal to the same angsty teenage audience. They're extremely dramatic. Etc. I've said before that I can't get mad at them or think they suck because I would probably have been into them if I was 14 today. I was 14 in 1995 so I liked SP.

It's really sad how many people get mad that their favorite angsty band is being compared to the current angsty band. It's funny how SP fans think the band exists in some kind of vacuum where no one is inspired or derivitive of the Smashing Pumpkins. It's as if the angsty lyrics aren't supposed to spin off into other angsty bands with angsty lyrics.

so you're saying you listened to the pumpkins because of the goth drama. they're obviously similar in their appeal to the angst teen segment or whatever, but i don't think people have a problem with that, they just wanna point out that their music is completely different. yes there's some cool queenish stuff in there, but they're first and foremost an mtv-punk band. and that's cool, but i think it's weird that those of you that like them act like they're the new pumpkins, just because you found someone with a similar image. but maybe the smashing pumpkins wasn't more to you than that

of course there's the desired controversy of saying you like mcr to count in too. which is why we have these threads and what makes me think they don't really think so highly of them

i don't hate them. i can appreciate what they're trying to do, i just think they're failing (sadly, 'cause i don't think it's necessarily for lack of talent either). i don't have a problem with them because they're 'the new fad'. i would love to love such an unapologetic attempt at the ultimate teen drama band for the new generation, but i just don't like the music and it's hard for me to understand why you guys do. but to each his own, just don't act like anyone who happens to not enjoy mcr is some bitter old man stuck in the nineties

I take issue with this sentiment for a couple reasons.

For one, I don't think My Chemical Romance possesses an element of timelessness. Billy's voice may be whiny, faggy what have you, but it doesn't sound childish. As I said before, MCR sounds like Disney music for teen sitcoms. I don't see how that same case could be made for SP. I have trouble seeing a 30 year old person listening to MCR 15 years from now. Try to say the same about the Pumpkins, but I think their appeal & sound is much broader and more dynamic than anything this emo fad shits out.

I think the cliche of the older generation not liking the new has been outdone only by the cliche of the younger generation bitching about it. I have actual reasons as to why I like the Pumpkins over MCR or Alice in Chains over Nickelback or Nirvana over Puddle of Mudd beyond my age.

that's the thing. seeing as how billy's main audience is myspace and new potential market mcr fans, emo is exactly what we're gonna get
