ps3 is too risky a buy imo. the verdict is out on whether blu ray is going to be a prominent propietary media, and whether the ps3 itself is going to be near successful as its past iterations.

i personally think in about two years it'll pick up. but i dont think i'd get one in fear of it being like the nintendo 64 - where it was pumped as some great console but the developers jumped ship early in its life.

Dirty cops exposed: cut to front of PS3 line

A pair of greedy Rhode Island police officers have been accused of skipping the line that formed outside of Providence Place Mall's Sony Style retail store on PlayStation 3's launch day. Two security guards allowed the officers, along with five others, to move past those who had gathered earlier. The guards have since been dismissed from employment, and the officers now face punishments handed down by their respective police departments.

One of the officers has admitted to his superiors that he cut the line, but believes in using his authority to do so, he has done nothing wrong. "I just beg to differ. We think he did something very wrong," expressed a concerned Providence Police Chief Dean Esserman. "He's been identified and he's going to be disciplined."

The second officer, of Warick, is currently under investigation. "If the facts bear out these allegations, we will take disciplinary action against the officer," declared Warwick Police Chief Steve McCartney.

speaking strictly in terms of buying a blu ray console, its a very good value. i think most blu ray players go for like $1000 whereas the ps3 is like half that much

the cops should be fired for using their position as cops to cut in line and get PS3s. they've dishonored the badge. pathetic!

Here's a different report on the same blu-ray story:

Survey: Sony's Rep Killing Blu-ray

It looks like Sony's grand scheme to turn the Playstation 3 into a Blu-ray Trojan Horse may have backfired. A recent survey here in the US points to a distrust of Sony and their strong-armed, cram-Blu-ray-down-your-throat tactics as a major factor in consumer negativity surrounding the Sony-backed format.

Personally, Sony's tactics didn't bother me much. The PS3 costs less than some Blu-ray drives, so I see it as a nice add-on feature. What did annoy me and continues to annoy me to this day, is that the console's delay was, it seems, caused mostly by Blu-ray issues and that on-going stock shortages can also be traced back to the Blu-ray bits.

I still haven't made up my mind about which format, via a game console, I like more. Right now I'm sorta leaning toward HD-DVD, though I think that has more to do with the PS3's still percolating interface. Brian Crecente

I don't even know what the fuck blu-ray is and I don't know why I should care, but you'r e a moron.

I remember you needing something to do with a minidisc, I just can't exactly remember what it was. I had one until I got an ipod. I was happy with it.

oh it was a TCP/IP cord. I don't really care. I really hate having to convert all my mp3s into the sony sound format so I can write it onto my minidiscs. I hate how obnoxiously bulky and SONY oriented they made it. They're such pricks.

Besides, I highly doubt that their software is linux compatable since they probably hate the shit out of the ops because it's free source (HOLY CRAP WHAT KIND OF SENSE DOES THAT MAKE?) so even if i got the TCP/IP cord then I would still have to find a patch to make the program work, and that's about a one in a million shot. I can't even find a patch to make Civilization III work.

I'm a bit lost myself. Sorry you couldn't get it to work for you. I still have a softspot for my old minidisc. I loved that format for a long time.

You know the cord you use to plug the minidisc player into the back of your computer? I don't have that. And my OS isn't windows so I can't use the software even if I did have the cord.
