About 500 GB of music and the rest are TV shows and Movies.

Probably a good bit of ebooks and some comics that I don't have the time to read.

Oh, I think I'm running a Liteon Dual layer DVD burner, but I can't remember.
AMD rocks. You can't make a system as powerful as that for such a cheap price.
When did you put that system together?

Also what made you want the Manila? I bet it stays cool.

He's got 500GB of music alone. I hardly think an external terrabyte drive would be cost effective

Why not?

You can save yourself money by going to newegg and getting an internal 320GB hdd for like under $100.

Then, for $30 or $40, buy an external enclosure (I use a Vantec NexStar).

You save tons of money this way.

Holy shit man, that must take forever. And yeah, the cost of even one blank disc is crazy. I hope BR-ROM comes out on top of HD-DVD though. It's so much more ideal for storage.

I bought the Manilla because it was the absolute cheapest AM2 chip at the time (late Sept.) with the thought of going to dual core when they get cheap.

I only have the stock chip fan and one case fan and I've had no heat issues.

I wish I could get rid of the huge collection of DVDs I'm currently amassind.

Which one of you guys built your computers yourselves? I'd imagine the people who are familiar with the specs of their comps built theirs, but it's possible someone else built it. Also, what OS are you running, and is it a pirated copy?

the 320GB option wouldn't even store his music files alone. Not to mention you're now running that drive through USB, so it makes it suited only for a storage device. Going with an external for that much data would not be cost effective because he'd need a second or third drive right away

I built every computer I ever owned up until this one, and yes it came with XP MCE.

Nice. I only built my last two, but... I was in high school when I started on both of them. I guess the others were "family" computers, not really my own. My version of Windows may or may not be borrowed from a friend. Who's to say?

My system:

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

System Memory 1024.5

Processor Speed 3001.0

DirectX Version 9.0c

Display Device NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE

Display Memory 256.0

Sound Device (Get Drivers) Realtek AC97 Audio

It runs halflife 2 (well) which is good enough for me right now. It has wireless everything too and a 21' flat screen CRT with a 120hz refresh rate.

I expected we'd have a few more Linux/Unix guys here... Maybe they're busy telling their internet exploring programs how to work... he he he. Sorry, Linux is really cool, but I'm too lazy to bother with all that fun.

Yes, I built this comp myself.

I have the FSB overclocked from 266MHz to 333MHz. CPU temps stay at like 45-49C, because I underclocked the CPU from 2GHz to 1.8GHz. There is no drop in performance, because the 333MHz FSB speed still makes the CPU run faster than it did at stock settings.

Also, I hate Linux.

True. So get a second drive and enclosure, you'd still probably be paying the same price as you would for just ONE that you buy in the store. It's ideal for storage and smaller media files like mp3 or flac. Even a lot of video. Also, a lot of enclosures have FireWire.

Uh, we were talking external drives vs. getting a BR burner when they come down in price...

But then you have to ask yourself if it's worth waiting for BR burner prices to fall if you can just get a couple large hdd's. I just got a 320GB instead, and backed up my media to a bunch of DVD-R's. I don't mind if they're spread across multiple discs, media is cheap these days. Files that are larger than a DVD5 are of course a still a problem.
