uhhhhhh DC/NoVA is where people who are sick of the south (and for good reason, there are a lot of slow inbred hillbilly idiots, of course) and want to live in the "city" and pay a million dollars for a home, drive an SUV, have trophy children, and shop at high end stores . I don't consider that very 'southern'

and noone is "from" there because it's a horrible place to live and noone stays there very long. and by horrible I mean expensive and the traffic is ridiculous.

Had Funnel cake this summer at a county fair in MI.
Granted it was the first time I remember seeing it there.
Also had elephant ears which is the usual.

Actually, funnel cakes were originally associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch region of the United States.

I used to work with this girl who was from Tennesee, but as a child was so embarassed by her Southern accent that she told me she would watch the Xfiles and practice talking like Gillian Anderson. I guess it worked, she hasn't a trace of an accent...

my mother used to yell at me when I spoke with much of an accent. I mean I still have one but it's not thick... it gets pointed out to me occasionally but now that I don't live there anymore I don't mind having one.

You mean the Amish? Didn't they also invent donuts? I picked up an Amish cookbook once and everything in it was either deep fried or contained lard.

Well, now ya tell me! And just where are the million dollar homes (other than Georgetown), SUVs, and high-end stores here? And so then what are the Southern cities such as Atlanta all about?

And so few are "from" DC because, being such a government and politics oriented city (plus all the universities here) is just a naturally very transient city.

You haven't spent much time in major cities have you.

um you've been living there for like 6 months now and you are giogn to tell me about it? I lived in virginia for 21 years and I think I would know something about the other half of my state. I have family there and most of my friends from college were from there. I had to go to a fuck-ton of field trips there through grade school.

BUT YOURE RIGHT, I DIDNT DRIVE THE 4-5 HOURS NORTHEAST EVER IN MY 21 YEARS IN VA.

Um, I have lived here before. But, ok, way to miss the point. As I stated previously, DC is a mix. Those who have lived in both Northern and Southern states agree. And ALL major cities/metro areas can be considered as expensive and as having horrible traffic. Based on having also lived in Chicago, NYC, and spending a lot of time in San Francisco, DC is the least expensive of those and has better traffic than those. (And that is what I meant by saying that your comment sounds like it comes from the mouth of someone that has not spent much time in major cities.)

And my point, having lived in Northern areas, being that DC is not "Northern". And my point also, having also lived in Southern areas, being that DC is somewhere inbetween the two.

i live in atlanta and generally dislike it b/c it's a "big city"

however, from what i've heard from people who live in those other big cities, it beats the shit out of them in terms of the general kindness of the populace, home prices, etc

obligatory sexist comment:

y'all should just settle this, not by argument and the usage of your pretty little heads, but instead an oral sex contest

oh and julio: your I-64 shit is fuxored

my family is from about 30 miles north of I-64 and we're southern as all get out

however, i will say this...about 15 miles north of my family's house is where southern accents disappear

look most people that are stereotypical southerners are proud of what they are and hate yankees, they think you are know-it-all hard asses.

people that arent stereotypical either long to escape the hellhole of stereotypical southerners or have learned to live with people automatically thinking they are idiots

I dont consider Texas southern and I don't consider Florida to be southern.
