I'm 44% Dixie because i was raised by midwesterners. most of the words i use are from the great lakes, apparently. Although I got mostly texas words outside of that.

i used to dislike being a native texan when i was a kid because my dad has always talked down about the south. because both my parents are minnesotans im probably keener to a lot of the differences they complain about than some other texans. i dont mind it now, though. texas has always produced soldiers in great quantity and quality for every war. and though the accents in the south are pretty gross im not really impressed with northern accents either. people complain about bible thumpers or whatever, but to me theyve just been a source of entertainment when scanning HAM radio as a boy scout and i agree with their politics. northerners are guilty of all kinds of green party and democrat knavery and i dont think people are better educated in the north than the south as a rule. i dont like the term "yankee". i dont hold any bias against northerners for being northerners, though the ones that assume theyre superior just for being from the north get on my nerves. humor about alabama being associated with incest or stupidity is as bad as "from the ghetto" humor

I've spent most of life in the Midwest, East, and West, but I guess being born in GA and living in VA as a toddler resulted in my having a primarly Southern vocabulary.

i agree with the latter. i lived in northeast texas during my high school years and loved the food . though the accents (east texans have been studied for their distinct accents) got on my nerves until i got use to it. they made fun of me, calling me a brit and such.

Texas is pretty great, depends on where you go though. I like to think of Texas as more southwest than southern. I will admit alot of the people in louisiana, mississippi, alabama and arkansas are pretty

Well, Texas WAS its own country for a bit. They've never forgotten that. It makes sense that they should feel pride and a bit separate from the rest of the South.

So is anyone here from the South who isn't from Texas.
Are this board's active posters like 72% Texan or what?

I think Southern accents tend to make everyone from outside the South think that you are stupid.

I currently live in DC, which is officially considered the South (in reality, it is more like a mix of the South and North, like if Atlanta and NYC joined together and formed a new city). But, I am not really from the South.

I don't consider DC the South.
The states around it are probably pretty mixed too, but more Southern than Northern.

yeah for the most part. It's a bit more "northern" that west virginia which borders about an hour or so north from where I grew up. about 85% of the people have southern accents and there are a whole horde of southern baptist churches. also a lot of old houses, farms, and large lots for houses. not many malls, lot of southern food, and a slow pace of life.

its pretty boring

and since I've moved out west I realized that where I grew up had amazing italian food and pretty-fraeking-close-to-real philly cheesteaks (although you would get bitched out for saying that to someone from philly)

Its a weird area because it's starting to be populated by people from "northern" states who want to live in a cheaper and slower area... but don't want to move very far south (and think west virginia is a shit hole, which it is). so it's slowly being changed over but the southern baptists are holding their ground pretty strongly.

Someone tell me what they consider Southern food.

Collared greens, cornbread, black eyed peas - that type of thing?

uh funnel cake is fair food

southern food is just an approach to preparation I think.... not being afraid to use a lot of butter and animal fat(throwing animal fat into food to season it). unafraid to use pork (whats with california's distaste for pork?) and use of home grown ingredients. But yeah, fried chicken, corn bread, green beans, grits, butter, butter, butter, salt.

Yes, but the running joke in DC and the surrounding DC metro area (including NoVA) is that no one is actually from here. The people that live in DC are a good mix of people from other areas, including very Southern areas. I've lived in the South (inlcuding Southern VA) and I've lived in places like NYC - DC is the middle ground between those two. DC is not absolute South, but is so not all North.

It's Southern carnie food though. You go to a carnival or a state fair up here and they have fried dough, not funnel cake. And believe me I look every time...
