im studying photography at a university in toronto. i wont even start to defend this as an academic choice, though, dont get me wrong. i mean i am set on doing art and photography in particular and i absolutely will defend that, but im not so keen on "studying" this in any formal context. i took two years off after high school just because i was fighting this and didnt want to go to school for it because i thought it was a crock of shit to think you could even learn something like that. needless to say, it kind of is. its valuable for other reasons though

i have some parttime job doing typical menial shit for a few dollars over minimum wage. i typically spend my weekends doing this

how about you?

which coalition were they a part of? the "moderate" coalition?

did this vote differ from your vote in the past election? if so why? were you disenchanted with the ruling coalition? im to understand that they were really sitting on their ass and that the economy was a big concern. i thought swedens economy was actually very competitive. everyone points to it as an example of how a strong welfare state can coexist in a mutually beneficial relationship with a strong, competitive economy.

i'm doing good in one of the toughest and most popular biochemistry educations this country has to offer. only made two tests so far but i've finished in the top 10% on both, in classes of 100 people with almost straight A's in everything from the swedish college system (it's between high school and college, with an emphasis on college, 16-19).

i've also read about one semester of philosophy. i have some idea of the difference, this is 200% harder and takes infinately more discipline and intelligence. photography is not really even on the map.

you might find this surprising, but mind reading is still not a skill that is available to most people.

you think he needed to know what you did was difficult after you explained how competitive it was just before that?

im not trying to insult you or anything, but im just saying there's no need to be defensive here, it just seems like he's asking you to describe yourself and you're asking him to describe himself, there's no need for comparisons in difficulty, discipline, and/or intelligence.

you don't seem to get this:

the first part showed that it was difficult, the second part showed that i have (except the perception i've got from reading a lot of philosophy, national economics, politcal litterature etc) gotten first hand information on what these human sciences people actually are doing and that in COMPARISON, the things i'm doing now seem more much more difficult. ie, i'm not saying the same thing in both cases.

in threads like these i only read dean's posts. theyre like the brilliant maneuverings of a well-steered yacht, solitary in an ocean of dreariness and stupidity, sails full with the winds of just european snobbery, self-assurance and superiority, bullying the waves and reeking sulfurous creatures below

it takes infinitely more something, but i wouldnt say its "intelligence." the type of "intelligence" that goes into making art is entirely different than the type thats suited for somethign scientific, like biochemistry. if all these things were measured on one scale, as youre suggesting, then all of the genuis mathematicians and scientists should be the most brilliant artists in the world. theyre very, very different

but, absolutely, theres no comparison in the actual work involved. i admire all the (asian) students that make up the engineering faculty of my school and feel kind of bad at times that im not actually applying myself to something as intensive and specialized as that. but im not going to lie to msyelf and pretend i actually care about it, and im not going to dictate the course of my fucking life on some kind of abstract scale like that

that said i do work very hard at what i do. i have my own darkroom and im, without any exaggeration, way ahead of my peers. from the work ive gotten marked, its all been 90% and up and i just got 95% today on my midterm exam for "critical thinking", which is basically a course on epistemology and logic. im not acting like these are super accomplishments in themselves, but i reject this idea that art is inherently the lazy-man's pursuit

of course you're sick of it, retard. i'll tell you something, managing to get through a little logic and epistomolgy is NOTHING, unless it's much closer to maths. i know that it was something along the lines of:

if erland has a penis in his anus, can we logically deduce that he's gay?

A: no, perhaps he was raped, for example.

and then you've learnt some terms, like counter argument, premiss or whatever it's called in english. i've read that kind of logic as well my friend, it is nought.

and then you can say: man i've studied logic in school, i can play the game of the science people but choose not to.

you have to have a certain level of intelligence to understand and perform in science. there are probably some really intelligent people out there taking pictures or painting, but there is no comparable requirement of a certain brain functionality. honestly, what would the thought processes leading up to taking a provocative photo be? without the prejudices that art schools instill, someone with an IQ of 80 could probably be trained to take a good one.

this section of the thread is a bit like the scene in good will hunting in that bar where damon and the harvard guy go at it. not as good, though to be fair, it's pretty much impossible to top a movie like that with a thread

this is retarded. i said i didnt think of it as some kind of accomplishment, like youre implying i did, i was saying that im not just sleeping through school like you think all artists do, and that i am working hard on the courses i am taking.
but to put it into perspective, i got the highest mark in the class and the rest of the class, at least half of whom were in some applied science or another (geniuses by your measure), actually failed the motherfucker

but, tell me dean, why are you still such a moron? i mean you can talk all day about what you got on some tests and how what youre studying demands such a uniquely large amount of intelligence and so on, but why, then, are you having such a hard time putting any of this into practice outside of your specific field? why is alexthestampede one of the biggest idiots on here, despite his work in biochemistry (i dont know if you were joking about this or whatever)? you seem to take more pride in the fact that youre simply accomplishing x task, than you are about what this actually means.

2. a distinguishing mark or feature; stamp: Courtesy is the cachet of good breeding.

or

3. a sign or expression of approval, esp. from a person who has a great deal of prestige.

?

comparing studying liberal arts vs. science is pretty stupid, i dont know why the issue of difficulty was brought up in this thread. dean seems to get defensive and wants to defend himself and his intelligence, something no one was really challenging or cares about in the first place.

not all people avoid science just because it's hard, something else may interest them! some bio majors i know who are brilliant with that absolutely hated their english classes, because they couldnt write papers for shit.

ca·chet (kă-shā')
n.
A mark or quality, as of distinction, individuality, or authenticity: “Federal courts have a certain cachet which state courts lack”

an indication of approved or superior status

and hey, look where this thread's going. my favorite topic.

where did i say that you're sleeping through school? where did i say that ALL people who study science are geniuses?

let's start there. give me some quotes because right now, i can't seem to remember ever writing anything like that.

so everyone failed but you? that is one HARD test. can you give me a sample question? but don't ignore the other post, that's the main discussion, this is just out of sheer interest.
