I don't get all the sudden cheering for Rae. I mean are people totally oblivious of the chaos he created when being Ontario PM? How can this guy even stay in politics? I don't get it. Someone please explain.

you're overstating. he made a lot of fiscal decissions based on bad economic advice. ontario dove into recession while he was in power, but definitely not because of his actions. any premier would seemingly have left the province "in chaos" if they were in power at that time.

undeniably the man is very intelligent and a great speaker. it has been leaked that the Conservatives think he is the greatest threat to their power. he has the power to unite the left. i would love to see him at the head of the liberal party, and indeed, as leader of our nation.

well, possibly I do as I wasn't around here at that time, but still I do believe there's a bit of difference between 'chaos' and 10 billion provinical deficit. He can be a great speaker, intelligent and all, but once you're a PM, you take a responsibility for everything. It doesn't mean that if you don't have a clue about economics, you are automatically excused for what happened with that. He picks up the people who tell him what to do.

I mean, 10 billion deficit, come on.

i don't think he's denying any of the mistakes he has made, Jan.

and i agree with phaedrus, although i wish i had more info to support those facts. he picked his cabinet and all that, of course, so he is responsible for everything, but... i think that at the time he lacked the experience (that he now has) to do better.

i think i seriously underestimated the influence of Quebec.
unfortunately i think he was the least likely candidate to beat Harper. i still like him better than Ignatieff though.

do you really think so? I mean he seems to be quite decent, serious guy who knows what is he doing. And he is from Quebec (again).

I sort of saw this coming as both Rae and Ignatieff had a lot of baggage with them. Dion was the only real respectable and qualified one there and I think the Liberals thought twice about electing Rae or Ignatieff.

yeah, i guess the Quebec angle should give the liberals a bit of an edge. he might also steal some NDP support because of his strong environmental support. i just don't think he's going to get the support from the west that the liberals need to win back a majority.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's to my understanding that people from Quebec want to be separate, yet, at the same time, continue to share Canada's currency, health care, and methods of taxation? I do not say this to piss off any French Canadians, but how can you truly be independent if you still want those things?

It's called local autonomy, Eff. Like Scotland or Catalonia.

Oh, right. I was under the impression that they were trying to be unlike somewhere like Scotland but truly be separate from the rest of Canada in every way, so what I previously mentioned, when I read about it, confused me. Not so much now... but it'll be interesting to see if they can actually get what they want.

no offence, but isn't change in the meaning of political terms quite a common phenomenon? like, didn't "republican" once stand for anti-racism and anti-catholicism while now they're pretty much the most important regressive force out there?
