1) Disconnect the DVD RW drive and see if that solves the problem
2) Run ScanDisk and look for errors showing a hdd failure
3) Reinstall XP

If those don't work, I presume the motherboard is dead and I'll be buying a new one. Oh joy!!!
this is like presuming you have a flat tire because the engine is bad

this sounds like an OS problem, plain and simple. Try to rollback your system to a time that it worked

last year my laptop started to behave like this as well (bluescreens here and there, sedning reports). At first it was only like once in a while, then it was more frequent and such, and now it's just lying there, not even willing to give me a bluescreen when I turn it on - the screen is just black..

good luck!

Update:

I started, and Windows shut down every 5 or so seconds. I tried to run chkdsk /r c:, but it said that was in use by another device or something like that.

So I formatted the hdd, and reinstalled Windows, only it said the files weren't XP files and installation failed.

I switched to a brand new, unopened hdd (took out the other), and installed XP. Same result as above.

Fuck me.

And where did you get the RAM? If you've only had it a month and got it from somewhere like Newegg they should let you RMA it.
It is from Newegg. But I don't see how it can be RAM now since the reinstall CD (an original Windows XP cd, not a hijacked copy) won't read.

Sarah says it's my motherboard. MOTHERFUCKER!

Anyone know how i can permanently remove a bad thread from explorer.exe? for a year i have had to cut the thread every time i turn my computer on or it goes immediately to 100% CPU usage.

Check the ram anyway - if you had mentioned that you'd recently got new ram, I would've jumped on this right away.

We can rule out OS problem, if you're doing a clean install.

Make sure the XP cd is clean. Soft, lint free cloth, wipe from the inside to the ouside.

Also, Just for faeces and laughter, which drive are you using the CD in?

The CD is clean, yeah. And I have two different drives and tried both with the same result. Each time I put the CD in it said different files were missing - never the same.

exactly what i said, it's a thread in EXPLORER.EXE that is basically a virus that cannot be detected by any antivirus software. I have a program called procexp on my computer that i open right before my computer finsihes starting up and i kill the thread before it shoots up to 100% cpu usage. i've read in the windows forums that other people have this problem but windows as no real answer to it and i can't figure out how to permanently kill this thread in explorer.exe. it's pretty irritating to deal with and it's somehow getting progressively worse.

you could always have someone send you a copy of their explorer.exe and then replace it in dos or something somehow, no?

Did you try AVG yet? I had a similar experience earlier this year, and that did the trick.

the only thing i can think of is to try running your comp on each stick separately. if you manage to get it to work on one stick and not the other, well then you've found your problem. i don't know of any software you can use to check it, though.

That's actually plausible though, when I was a kid I thought that sneezing on my PC would give it a virus.

Update after memtest has run for a while:

Pass 72 %
Test 91 %
Test #8

... (skipping now to the WallTime line)

WallTime 0:42:54
Cached 1022M
RsvdMen 620K
MemMap e8280Std
Cache on
ECC off
Test Std
Pass 0
Errors 648
ECC 0

The red area alll has 3 under Tst and 0 under Pass. It lists lots of failing addresses, such as 0003153e3d4 - 769.8mb, and more and more with different addresses and mb numbers.

Under Good it has 40404040 on many modues and 00010000 on others. Under bad it lists 50404040 on most and 00010000 on others.
