Default Regular MP3 player thread. Topic: Which one is best?

I'm looking to upgrade from my iRiver, and not too fond of the newer iRiver models out. The new Toshiba Gigabeat S has my eyes - a bit smaller than the iPod, better playback, better video screen, etc. Anyone heard much of this?

I was looking at the Zen M - the only thing that bothers me is it appears to be really thick. I haven't seen one up close yet, so it might not be so bad in person, but it looks really, really bulky. Have you handled one?

The iPod serves all of my needs.

Poontang
Music
Video games

I can look at pictures of naked women on my iPod, I can listen to music on it, and it has built-in video games. The idea that people refuse to buy it because they don't like the name is really illogical and results in them buying a crappier product.

CNET reports that the toshiba has a disappointing/poor battery life.
toshiba:
audio: 12 hrs
video: 3 hrs

the ipod claims 20 and 6 respectively

http://reviews.cnet.com/Toshiba_Giga....html?tag=coco

both ipod and gigabeat got a 8.3 overall review rating...although this is before they tested the battery life with disappointing results.

Yeah I have, and while it's a tad bulkier than the Ipod, its MUCH more durable, especially to scratches.

that's about as useful as me saying "i've had my 4g ipod for almost two years, i use it daily and it looks almost brand new"

anyway, these threads suck. people only ever recommend what they own and seldom support their recommendation with anything substantive

my advice, sppunk, is to read a bunch of reviews on a bunch of different web sites, then head down to an electronics shop where they'll let you play around with a bunch of different units so you can get a feel for build quality, interface quality, physical dimensions and whatever other criteria are important to you. my personal preference is towards ipods, largely for their interface and itunes interoperability, but they lack fm radio and recording functions out of the box, so if either of those are important to you should probably buy something else. at this point audio quality is more or less great across the board, so i guess battery life is the main remaining issue. comprehensive reviews should cover that

he already posted a link to a cnet review of that toshiba player elsewhere; obviously he is aware that reviews exist on the internet already. the point i was making is that, if you want to make an informed decision, it's a good idea to read numerous reviews across numerous web sites. don't be a dick
