Yeah I should quote misspelled sources without that and let my professor penalize me for spelling. You know, so I don't come off as arrogant and disrespectful when I quote a pioneer who spells Cheyenne "Shyan" or Missouri as "Misruh."

well it's not an all encompassing rule not to use it, but you should be careful that your use is for some legitimate purpose and is necessary. it would look out of place in some literary quote where all the words were old english and if you were arguing with an opponent and he said "on accident" or something, it would just look petty.

Sic (pronounced as "seek") is a Latin word meaning "thus", "so", or "just as that".
