Yes, this is my very objection to red eye, though like I said, I've never tried it.

If you're drinking espresso and you need more caffeine, why not just drink more espresso, I say?

Because you're cheap, maybe? Maybe it's the American ideal of a "good deal" combined with the American image of black coffee, like a better version of Cafe Americano for your buck.

quick fact: lighter coffees have more caffeine than darker, so if you're buying dark roasts for ore strength, all you're getting is strength of flavor, more of the caffeine is killed or whatever by the roasting processes.

Yeah, I don't like drinking the lighter breakfast blends you get in a lot of restaurants because they make me jittery. The same thing happens with energy drinks; the caffeine level is misplaced in my bloodstream somehow and it's all a nervous rush but no mental wake-up. Darker roasts and espresso are more my speed because they're more gradual and cerebral.

Dietrich Mateschitz and Nina Avery traveled to Thailand and saw that the tuk-tuk (rickshaw) drivers drank a substance to keep them energized throughout the day. After some alterations to the recipe, and a flavor modification for the public, Red Bull was born. He adapted it from the Thai beverage Krating Daeng

In 2001, the drink was investigated by the Swedish National Food Administration after being linked to the deaths of three consumers. It has been subject to a number of other health concerns regarding glucuronolactone, a precursor of taurine. Sale of Red Bull as a normal soft drink is prohibited in Denmark, Norway, France and Uruguay. Due to the link with taurine, local authorities categorized Red Bull as a medicine and suggest customers ask for medical advice before drinking. Because of this, only energy drinks without taurine are sold in France. The official imported Canadian Red Bull is a caffeinated version of Thai Krating Daeng. Until late 2004, its sale was prohibited in Canada. Now a can must carry a warning label that says:

Cautions: Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children, pregnant or breast-feeding women, caffeine sensitive persons or to be mixed with alcohol. Do not consume more than 500 mL per day.

However, no such warning label is present on tins sold in the UK, though people who consume the beverage in excess (more than 2-5 250 mL tins in a 24-hour period) have been known to express discomfort, such as nausea, stomach pains, gas, and/or sleeplessness.

I'm not sure what they're saying by the Canadian version being Thai Krating Daeng which was the drink that Red Bull imitated.

A new energy drink claiming to be 350 percent more potent than Red Bull has landed in Las Vegas and shares the namesake of a certain illegal drug, mirror optional.

Cocaine, billed as "the legal alternative," claims to bring a high in five minutes, with a caffeine after-boost 15 minutes later. Effects last five hours and are cheaper than the regular lowercased cocaine.

Red Bull + Absolut Raspberry is still one of the greatest things ever.

However, Bawls is the tastiest, most refreshing energy drink I have ever had. I once shared one with M.C. Hammer and I will never forget it. Pimp Juice is delicious and tastes exactly like Nerds candy, but it doesn't have the kick of a Red Bull. Not to mention that fucking Nelly makes money from it.
