Question Does downloading music dimish your attention span for albums?

I find myself not giving albums that I download as much repeat listens if I don't enjoy them at first. When I purchase albums, I find myself spending more time with the album and giving it a chance to grow on me if I don't particularly like upon my first listens.

I don't know.

For the same number of albums ill have the same attention span whether i bought them or not. Just that its easier to go overboard and get hundreds downloaded. I bet dean moriaty feels the same as you and he buys all his stuff.

Be more discerning with your bandwith?

I think it depends on your attention span, or at least how easily distracted you are. I think it definitely makes albums less of an event or whatever, and you're probably right about giving them less of a chance because you don't have as much investment in them.

I still have a bunch of stuff in my music library that I don't even recognize

I tend to buy a lot more than download. I've been a bit broke lately, and have downloading quite a bit. I find myself forgetting about great stuff I've downloaded because of the abundance of other stuff I have to get around listening to. This doesn't happen when I buy my albums, even if I buy a lot at one time. You're right when you say it's easier to give something less of a chance when you have less invested in it.

i have alot on my computer and i justify it by knowing that i will get around to listening to it, kinda the attitude of "i might as well grab it now, even if i have to enjoy it later"

i dunno.

i wouldn't say that it diminishes my attention span, it's just that i'm more easily able to exercise my ability to choose what i listen to. i attend more to listening to quality albums rather than the shitty record that i shouldn't have bought from the record store.

I don't really download music that much, but I have a much greater attention span for a CD that I bought than something I burned from someone. It makes me wonder how much album artwork and liner notes and stuff really affect my musical experience.

Edit: Of course that may also be because I burn things that I don't want badly enough to spend money on.

Albums are too long nowadays anyway. Back when rock music was relevant in the 60s and early 70s albums tended to be an hour long or less.

Kinda related, I find that with ripped or downloaded albums on my PC or iPod I will rarely listen to a full album, and if so, it's always on shuffle unless it's some classic favorite album of mine, such as Siamese Dream.
