well, i think you could interpret the movie in many different ways. It just sort of depends on what you got out of it.

I thought that it was an extremely sad and depressing movie....
one of the main quotes of the movie "everyone dies alone..."

it's a story about a boys passage through time... time travel, and he may or may not be schizo.. and if you want to take the story in that sense... it's just a rather authentic look into the mind of a schizo.
Or, you can take it as a reality. A story of a boy, time traveling, trying to save the existence off all human life. Many people think that Donnie is actually the embodiment of Jesus... I don't really know if i buy into that whole perspective.. i think that there are many images and references there... but i think it's up to the idividual to determine the meaning behind this movie. I don't want to go too into detail, and ruin the movie for you... unless you've already seen it...
and if you did, did you like it?

what were your thoughts?

I understood shit about the movie until I watched it with commentary. I like it, but I certainly haven't put as much thought into it as others have. I've seen huge diatribes from people on why they think it's the best movie EVAR and how we just don't 'get it' if we don't like it. I probably don't get it, but the fact that there a lot of people who don't get it is at least comforting.

When I first saw it (before watching with the commentary) I just thought it was a movie vilifying psycho-drugs (and after Tom Cruise went on his rampage about them, I wondered if I was watching Scientology propoganda!). Sure, that's sort of a minor part of the movie, but that's all I really got out of it. After watching with commentary and hearing how layered it was, I just thought it was a movie that tried to hard to be something and as a result it lost me.

*shrug*

But yeah, like you, I've never been in a terribly good mood after seeing it.

hahah I know exactly what you mean, i've watched it about 4 times now, and i still don't really understand it. It's one of those movies, the more times you watch it, the more you understand. Everytime I watch it, i see it from a different perspective, i catch different things...
but, haha Noo, i don't think it's the greatest movie ever, at all. It has it's faults. But it is a good movie, and I think the way that the media portrayed as sort of a slasher/horror movie just ruined it! ---It's definitely not a scary movie.

citizen kane and a bout de souffle are pretty annoying
95% of french movies are annoying and have too much dialogue

Actually, that movie is about as thought provoking and philosophical as the Matrix, which is to say, only in a very shallow way.

I hate hate hate hate hate hate Stanely Kubrick except for Dr. Strangelove because that movie is funny. Kubrick still tries to ruin it with that awful part with James Earl Jones and that fucking checklist. That scene is the basic reason I hate Kubrick so much is that he really draws out movies unneccesarily with long, boring parts. Ugh god. I hate Clockwork Orange. I really really really hate 2001, that part with the fucking monkeys makes me scream.

I think the Matrix is at best an average action movie.

Alien is way better than Aliens.

I don't know if this is unpopular opinion, but there are lots and lots of Star Wars nerds; Blade Runner is the best science fiction movie ever made.

I just think the concepts of "fate" (i guess that's what you could call it??) are incredible. Maybe not understanding it is why I like it so much. WHATEVER.

The plot really isn't important in Donnie Darko anyway.

i like the second crow movie better than the first. i think it has to do with the photography and the cyberpunk feel that makes the representation of pain and sadness more poignant. i have to admit though, that i've seen a dubbed version of it more often than the original, so vincent perez' bad english is not a factor.

It's a great stoner flick that's actually funny even when you're not stoned.
