Default It finally looks like we no longer have to pay for the Spanish-American War of 1898

They finally ruled that it we no longer need it 108 years later! It's only 3% of your phone bill, but that 3% has added up over the years...

Also please remember this people next time the government asks for a "temporary" tax.

I'd love to know how many other "temporary taxes" are out there... such as the "temporary federal income tax."

Most all of the gas tax was temporary as well. The government goes by common law practices on taxes - if it's taxed for more than X years, it's official!

Good news, now how long will it take to pay off the Iraq war?

This is another reason why modern warfare is so much more long and costly - it is not paid with taxes. When the government borrows (and inflates money) to pay for wars, the people don't feel it very bad at the moment and don't tire of spending. Whereas with taxes, it better be a damned justified war for people to fund it!

I believe it could be argued that WWII was justified. There is such a thing as a justified war - war is a possible articulation of any belief that incorporates any kinds of defense into it. Only complete and utter submissive pacifism would cause one to believe that all war is unjustified.

That war was completely justified at the time.
