Guys. PLEASE listen to Bohemian Rhapsody and report back on how dynamically flat it is.
RTB states this exact song as the peak of his over-production of records. And does it have dynamics? Quit jumping to conclusions without being able to back them up. |

listened to A Night At The Opera today for the first time in a little while (produced by Roy Thomas Baker), and it still stands as one of the benchmarks for recording, in my opinion. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is unbelievable, of course, but for those of you without the album, check out "Love Of My Life" and "Year of '39" for slightly less over the top tracks (and for an even more over the top track off the album, check out "Prophet Song"). i'm not the biggest fan of The Cars and i'm certainly not a big fan of The Darkness, but i'm so surprised that the Pumpkins will be working with RTB that i can't help but feel pretty excited. he strikes me as a producer that Billy might choose to work with on a song or two given their common interests in certain departments, but not for an entire album. maybe that's the plan, but either way, i think Billy will push RTB in a different direction - and vice versa - that will hopefully produce something more exciting than either one of them has ever done. i wouldn't have minded seeing Flood's name on the official site, but i'm glad Billy continues to keep me guessing with every move. and to reference an earlier post in which brendo mentioned that TheFutureEmbrace wasn't recorded through a vintage console to tape, i wouldn't be so sure. as far as i know, every album Billy's ever worked on has been tracked to tape. the biggest studio person to have an influence on Billy is Flood, and Flood swears by tracking to tape. just because there's a lot of keyboards doesn't mean the album is direct to ProFools. the low-end on TFE is rich and full, very saturated sounding. the fact that everything has so much life to it suggests to me that analog gear was involved throughout, and all signs point to tape from listening to it, although drums are usually the biggest hint, and there aren't any. |

If anything I think this guy coming in could add some thing that would make this record distinct from the others because all of their past worked have either been Flood or Vig but always with Corgan at the helm in one way or another. The difference with this guy is that he had a lot more history in classic pop/rock ala Queen and Cheap Trick than either Flood or Vig had....Flood worked with NIN, Depeche Mode, Erasure and even New Order before he worked with SP and Vig was known more for very obscure little punk bands pre-SP and Nirvana. Early SP work has a lot of Queen and Cheap Trick influences, this all fits very well.

Well...a year ago I would have expected something exiting by now, and all we have is the producer of the album. Still no line up.

But in regards to the record and the producer, at first I was like "I don't really care." But after reading through the info that people have posted I'm actually really excited. I do really enjoy and appreciate how the pumpkins shift their sound from album to album, but I really like the wandering qualities of some of the earlier music, and the dynamics of it too. After understanding a bit better how this producer works, I'm really optimistic that those qualities will be properly worked into whatever other sounds or styles SP wishes to explore this time around

is it just me or does somebody else think that Roy Thomas Baker would have been a better choice for MSOTS?

Producers are overrated...lol.
producing and production, are not. but honestly, i ain't worried about this. im worried about the forces of eeeeehvil who don't want this to see the light of day. im not easy just looking at the stars figuring, "ok, the monthly scroll has been pretty spot on all year..." so I guess I should be more patient. or...we're sitting on a bomb that can be detonated, but no, not just yet, appearently false idols must still be pursued, so we sit? well, not exactly like that but on one level it appears to be so... the mother fuckin paradigm has shifted since we created it and Im STILL faced with faces who cannot see...and don't have the urgency. whatever the score, we gonna lose at this rate cause I dont think we're reading the gales correctly at this most critical juncture. fuckn joke, but I guess i have no choice but to be more...patient. but If we got ours, then I figure, they got theirs now...and the parrelel of the wars may not be lost on me. tick...tock...tick... |
