they can get pretty ghetto though. i lived around atwater village until i was like 10, and while i loved it, it felt like there was a crackhouse down every street.

there's absolutely nothing ghetto about silverlake any more
even with echo park it's 90% gentrified now
eagle rock, too

atwater village does suck except that one stretch of glendale blvd.

lacma's permanent collection is pretty goddamn underwhelming, considering the size of this city

90% is a pretty generous number. i would not even say 50%. have you seen that movie Quincinera? it's supposed to be good. its about mexicans though so i dont think you'd like it.

i'm really sad LACMA didn't end up acquiring that klimt. oh man the legitimacy that would have brought. our local billionaire philanthropists really dropped the ball on that one.

After reading some hotel reviews online, I'm starting to reconsider staying downtown. What is my best option as far as location goes, i.e. lots of restaurants, outdoor activities, and shopping? Would Hollywood be any better?

don't go to pink's hot dog stand. if you want to get fast food, in-n-out is the way to go, and there are a million of them.

lacma generally has some good stuff, and their japanese art is pretty neat.

la beaches aren't as good as orange county beaches, in my opinion, but if you feel like driving for an hour and a half, go south on the 405 until you're in irvine, exit on the 133 south, go all the way through laguna canyon, and go to main beach or go north on pch a little bit and go to south crescent bay.

the santa monica pier is pretty underwhelming.

i like the arclight theater, which is on sunset and vine in hollywood, across the street from amoeba. afi puts on old movies on wednesday at 8, i think, unless they recently stopped doing that.

i think stein recommended doughboys on 3rd street near crescent heights to me, and the food there is pretty good. i also like hedley's in west hollywood (kind of small portions, though), and toi thai in hollywood and to a lesser extent, the santa monica location. there's also a burger joint in santa monica that i really like, but i can't remember the name. also, the farmer's market has a good variety of places to eat, but parking is kind of steep, from what i recall.

i don't know if ucla does it over the summer, but there's a fair chance it'll have free screenings in the james bridges theater in melnitz hall. the easiest parking lot for you to access would be #4, since it's really close to sunset, but i think there's a lot by melnitz. i don't really go that way, though, so i'm not sure off the top of my head. anyway, if you park it lot 4, you can either go up the oh-so famous janss steps, past the 52 asymmetries of royce hall, and past the bridge that is no longer a bridge.

marylin monroe's grave is in westwood, but that's boring, so don't go.

if you're rich, there's always rodeo drive in beverly hills.

newport beach has always been my favorite. i love the waves there. the santa monica pier can be fun, get on the ferris wheel. going up and down pch is a good time too.
