because my parents told me that they would pay for the car, and in exchange, i would buy my own computer. which was previously going to be a graduation/going away gift from them.

so i'm still out $2000, and would have been anyway if i'd paid for the car and received the computer as a gift.

You're a fucking immature, selfish idiot. obscured never said it wasn't necessary, she told you to man up and pay for your actions.

I know it's pretty much necessary, and it would be a huge inconvenience not to have one at school - but I said you could get by without one for a little while because most campuses have a bunch of computer labs. I have several friends at school who don't have computers because there are labs available. While it is an inconvenience they do get by okay.

The students I've know that haven't had one usually do have more trouble excelling (it depends on what kind of study they are doing though). I used to lend my laptop out to people so they could work on papers etc when labs were closed, but it came back smelling sorta funky once and that was that. I think getting by okay is a big price to pay instead of getting by well. Hopefully soon enough the $100 laptop will be put into production and computer "ownership" will be universal.

so in other words, it's nice to have one, but it's not necessary.

there's probably no one in your real life that you're able to talk down to. so if you need to use an 18-year-old on netphoria to satisfy that need, i guess i'm ok with that.

Well he doesn't have much of an option if his parents have so much control. He could pay to get the car fixed and they would still have bought him a laptop, so essentially they fixed the car and are not buying him a laptop and leaving him to do it himself, which he "is". His parents still own him... I agree the best thing would have been to try and pay for the car repair to equalize the actions enacted... but the outcome would still have been the same, I'm sure they are still his financial support so it would all trickle back down to him anyways. I'm not disputing his actions, I'm just saying whats the difference either way.

Fattening Ass, it looks really immature to call someone selfish, immature and stupid 3 times over in one thread.

Quite possibly, I would think its moreso redundant. Its like shouting at the wall. Perhaps hoping he'll open his eyes?

open my eyes to what, exactly? i'm lucky to have parents that are very much able to financially support me. i realize that this will not be the case for my entire life, but if they are currently willing and able, then i don't see a huge problem with them helping me out in this situation.

So you broke even.

What would have made more sense is if you paid for the car and they paid for the computer. Even if they're the same price. Because then there might be a feeling of having paid for the damage you caused instead of having someone else cover your ass... and you still would've gotten your laptop because your parent are loaded and that's what you're used to anyway.

In other words, there was an important life lesson to be learned, and you stole the answers while teacher wasn't looking.

FINANCIALLY, there is no difference, and I will give you that. But still...

The first 4 years I lived on my own i did without a decent computer or internet access. School supply worked fine for me. It's just cool to have your own computer, but surely you could think of ways you could do without one?

I will say that my school REQUIRED me to have a laptop with certain programs and certain requirements

but it definitely wasnt a mac... anyway

I am not debating that you didnt need the laptop, or that you parents wouldnt have paid for it or whatever... I am saying that you need to learn that you have to take more into consideration the GESTURE of what is going on rather than what you figure the end outcome will be. if you just get to know people and assume that they are going to come to some preconceived conclusion in the end of an argument, then you are going to really really make some people angry. parents are used to that shit and are pathetic in that they LET you get by without going through the formalities of "no I HAVE to pay for this car I will feel horrible unless I compensate you in some way" but it's mostly to be expected in your position.

honestly after i lost that necklace... if I didn't bring it up to my mother after she had reordered it, she would NOT make me pay for it again. I KNOW that, and I know that our relationship would not change in any way whatsoever if I so happened to forget to pay her back for the one she reordered... but you know what? About 4 years ago I would have done exactly that, but as I have "grown up" I have realized the important of dumb formalitites even if its not changing anything. a person spoiled like yourself is almost going to expect that people understand that "it would have worked out the same in the end." but I really hope for your sake that college does for you what I think its going to do for you.
