This is more out of curiosity than questioning your intelligence.

It's such a general term.

During the myelinization process, the formation of insulating sheathes around nerve cells allows cells to communicate at a faster speed and to integrate multiple stimuli simultaneously (NIMH, 2001). These coverings, which thicken during the myelination process, have been likened to the rings that denote tree growth (Wallis, 2004). As noted, unmyelinated fibers compose the gray matter of the brain; as the number of myelinated fibers increase, the gray matter decreases and the white matter increases. This process is thought to continue until 40 years of age (Begley, 2000).

There is a down side to myelination. As these nervous cells become insulated, they are less able to recover from nerve cell injury and have a decreased capacity for learning novel concepts (Wallis, 2004). As the human brain matures, it becomes faster and more selective in its conduction, but the adult brain is less equipped than the child's brain to heal or learn at the accelerated rates of childhood.
