Default Why do you guys think that the next sp album will be any better than machina?

is there any reason other than blind hope to lead you to believe that it will be better?

machina, which sucks, is way better than mary star of the sea, which is better than tfe.. in 5 years, the only sign of life from this guy was some acoustic songs that he thinks we're too unsophisticated to appreciate, nevermind the fact that sufjan blows his ass out of the water and we're somehow able to appreciate that..

my main point is this: bill may be able to create cool music, but that's not the music he releases.

bill's releases have gotten worse and worse, what on earth would make him suddenly put out something good? its not like jimmy, as awesome as he is, has the power to make bill not suck.

i lay this stake firmly in the ground: new sp will totally suck

i hope he makes me eat my words, but i'd be shocked if that ever happened. the last half decade has been a progression from ok but not amazing to dumb to bad to pathetic, embarassing, and shameful.

p.s. fuck you bill!!! you totally suck you jerkoff. why don't you write another slanderous confessional trying to sell a wankoff session masquerading as an album, you lousy old goon!!

When I was younger I thought the pumpkins had gone from awesome to crappy from MCIS to Machina. I realized the best music doesn't sound that incredible the first time you hear it, but it stays gold forever like Ponyboy after thorough listening.

But on post-pumpkins releases, wasn't Billy actively trying to make music completely removed from the Smashing Pumpkin's aesthetic?

I think if he goes back to a pumpkin's mindset, we might be pleasantly surprised.

also I've always liked Machina I & II. Obviously the Machina era doesn't stand up to previous efforts, but I have never understood the ridicule they recieve.

I think it comes from the whole "mystery" part of the album.

You have a point. Billy can be pretty frustrating sometimes. I am a younger fan though, so I missed out on the "mystery".

I got into the Smashing Pumpkins in 7th grade, only to find out that they had broken up the previous year. It was very sad.

the new SP will rule. and james and darcy will come back. and if anyone is too blind to see that, well...you're blind. it's all in the plan, it always has been. billy is a necessarily spectacular liar. he's the musical wizard of oz and you are all pawns in his mighty game.

2007.

How long has this whole "2007" thing been circulating? I remember hearing rumors about a 2007 return several years ago.

I think if Billy was 100% concerned with making money, he wouldn't consistently turn down big offers for Smashing Pumpkin's songs in commercials.

He's savvy enough to know that would cost him the meager fanbase he's still got left

ah, the dawn of history. it's too bad we'll never know for sure if davin came before or after the birth of space-time, 'cause it was back in the day

billy wrote "2007" at the end of the liner notes in pisces iscariot. he of course claims that there was no reason for it, but i think its pretty blatant that he has more or less masterplanned the entire career of the band from the start. i know conspiracy theorists always sound like idiots, but i have every confidence in this speculation. billy is not some average poet/musician who takes life one day at a time, and only thinks about his next project when his last one is completed. he is...special, more than one can easily comprehend.

I remember reading an interview with billy on billy-corgan.com a while back where he ranted about the state of the music industry and coporate bull shit. The site is almost completely shut down now, so I can't provide a link. I'll see if I can find one.

I honestly don't think his fanbase is as small as most people on here claim. They are still played frequently on area radio stations and I know plently of people who consider themselves fans. They are less "hardcore" fans now, but that is to be expected. When the Pumpkins return I completely expect people to interested and supportive. Unless, worst case scenario, the album is going to be as bad as all the naysayers on this board claim it will be.

Bummer for Hummer, big bonus for your karma payment plan, kiddies.

i think something to consider is that the pumpkins seriously needed a break. sometimes a guy's gotta get away from the usual routine in order to keep the quality coming. i trust that billy wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't something special. i can see why people would think this is lame, but i'm actually very excited to see what comes next. if the album isn't A+ material, than i won't be too perturbed because i know they have the absolute potential to kick ass live.
