Default Canadian athletes should be docked one medal point for being Canadian.

This rule should be established already.

It is. I'll be watching an event on television and just up and cheer for the Canadian even though I don't know anything about this person and their accomplishments have no effect on my life whatsoever. It's completely illogical to measure ones esteem (high or low) or judge others, based on the actions of atheletes who happen to share the same nationality as you and ditto for government. It's okay I think as long as it's harmless though... Up here patriotism is mostly just a medium for Roots to sell more clothes... Though in America I suppose it's used to rally support for wars. Whatever.

For me, the reason I really do cheer for Canada in hockey is because I think hockey is an important part of our national culture, and I think winning gold medals at it constantly is a matter of pride, and it means alot to be able to say we're the best country in the world at it.

there was an article in a newspaper talking about the 2002 olympics after they were over, saying something about the "seven gold medals that we won, and the one that we would have traded all the rest for".... I don't really like to think of it that way, but I agree. I think winning at hockey means more to more people in this country than winning at snowboarding or cross country skiing.....

That said, I think the reason we cheer for other Canadians at other sports is because on the big world stage, seeing someone from a town like Kelowna or Winnipeg or Kitchener gives us a sense of familiarity, even though you may have never been to that town yourself, you at least know where it is, and know that that athelete has more in common with you than any of the other athletes competing.

don't understand the basis for this statement. canadian athletes get very little funding, you know, and no monetary gold medal incentive like other countries, including the usa.

The only thing you have to understand about that statement is that Mr. Rhinoceros is acting like a douchebag.

i don't think it's odd to cheer for your country in shit like hockey, which is already a sport you know and love.

it's just when you turn on snowboard cross and start cheering for the american you never heard of. that's disgusting.

when you watch these things, do they introduce the athletes very well in the states? they do a pretty decent job on cbc here in canada. i do cheer for my country in every event, but you are correct that hockey, being what i know most about, is what i am the most passionate about by far.

I cheer for the Canadians in any event because I'm Canadian and I want them to do well in the olympics. If you think that's disgusting then there's something wrong with you.
