But it's stupid to rule out something from your diet just because consuming it in quantities several orders of magnitude greater than usual would cause you harm.

Consuming 100x more fat than you would normally will pretty much guarantee you heart failure in short order. Consuming 100x more water than usual in any given day will kill you very quickly. Drink 100 vodka shots — liver failure. Point is, "What happens when we consume way too much of this stuff?" simply isn't a useful method of deriving what is or isn't safe for us to consume in moderation.

Now, if there are studies suggesting that longterm moderate ingestion of aspartame leads to cancer, I would very much like to see them.
