I've been thinking recenlty about the Pumpkins reforming...
Only one band in rock history had an extended period of success, essentially broke up for a while and reformed to become more successful than ever for a longer period of time than the first period they were together: Aerosmith. So, can the Smashing Pumpkins be the next Aerosmith? They're gonna have to reach a whole new generation just like Aerosmith did. Can they do it? .... If you think about what Aerosmith accomplished, their comeback started with something that had never been done before (basically) ---> a marriage of rock and rap (Walk this way). That song just ruled MTV, it was fresh, ground-breaking, exciting... what better way to introduce themselves to a new generation of fans then with something like that? I mean, I was a fan of classic rock and I loved songs like "Dream On" but I had no idea who Aerosmith was. But, when I saw Steven Tyler and Joe Perry in the "Walk this way" video, it blew my mind. I just thought, those guys are beyond cool, wow. I've been a big fan of Aerosmith's ever since then. I'm thinking that if the Smashing Pumpkins are gonna become big again, they're gonna need something like "Walk this way". A great song or album that will define who they are and what they're about to a whole new generation, IMHO. The band clearly wants to be popular. Billy Corgan talked about "taking over the world one more time" when Machina was released. But, do they have it in them to do what Aerosmith did? They changed with the times and the Pumkins certainly can do that. I guess hope springs eternal and I have to vote yes. But, deep down, I don't think so, unless they can shock us all by reinventing themselves ala Madonna or something. It's gonna be intersesting. Last edited by morespsoon : 08-26-2005 at 10:32 AM. |

Who cares. Knowing BC's volatile frame of mind, with SP2 he'll don an alarm clock, down some homeopathic idiot-potions for his migraines and get to work on some pretty crappy hard rock no matter what.
If we start getting videos featuring numerous lycra-clad models with bad breast implants and huge hair (plus plenty of dry ice), we'll know the Aerosmith Factor is in effect. |

The problem is that for Aerosmith's "comeback" they relied on proffessional songwriters like Glen Ballard to create and produce their hits. Are SP going to do that too?

Also, what exactly does the "Other" option mean in this poll?
It seems like a yes or no question to me... |

I don't have time to research this right now, but if I remember right, they only had outside help on a handful of these. If there's enough interest about this, I'll look it up tomorrow. |

If the Pumpkins come back and achieve a greater success then they once had, awesome... but if they stick around and start making crap upon crap (which people will say about machina, though i think its the pumpkins best album) then I hope they are not the next Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, or Cheap Trick for that matter

BTW, have you actually heard "Pump", "Get a Grip", or "Nine Lives"? Those albums are incredible, IMHO. If you have heard any of those albums, what specifically didn't you like about them? |

I would first like to say that I think this is an interesting thread!
Second you have to consider the musical climate when Aerosmith broke it big again. While walk this way was new and fresh and good, nowdays literally eveything musically possible has been done whether or not the mainstream has yet to hear it and whatever Billy has in his pocket prolly wont be good enough to capture the masses and even more so capture their wallets. Think about it, while Billy is extremely talented, TFE flopped and while Zwan was adored and praised by critics, it wasn't any huge success. Also after Aerosmith became big they became more commercial than ever and this is why they got big again. If Billy on co. want to reclaim the rock world I truly think that there is only one way to do it. Become even more commerical. SP were always a commercial band with hooky songs and big production, but as they progressed through their career Billy wanted to experiement more and the masses didn't care for it (I did though and still do). So if SP wanna have multi platimun albums again and play the arenas they gotta crank out the distortion and dust of the melodies and hooks. Hopefully Billy can be able to create music in the vein of SP and still carve out his own new creative niche in the rock world. |

seriously, why couldn't they have some big second coming? maybe they don't need to be re-introduced with some other band, but if aerosmith can live on in a second act with crap like "cryin" or that armageddon theme song junk, surely the pumpkins could do it, and better (and it better be all 4 original members, even if some of them work against their will) |
