Default music/bands you got into

...because of people you know?

My older brother influenced my love for a lot of 70's rock when i was younger: Kiss, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Cheap Trick, etc. and he also inspired my love for R.e.m.

A few friends have gotten me into more modern metal stuff like Slayer, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Iron Maiden, and Morbid Angel.

The older sibling response is probably pretty common, but my bro did introduce me to The Replacements and I will forever be in debt to him.
Also when I was in 7th grade my uncle gave me two cds for christmas that blew my mind, and to this day they are still two of my ultimate favorites - Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy and The Pixies - Surfer Rosa. The greatest gift I ever recieved, hands down.

Based on these two bands, I would also recommend:
Satyricon
1349
Deeds of Flesh
Nile

Every single one of them.

Well, except the Smashing Pumpkins and maybe a few others I can't think of.

But mostly every artist I listen to, I listen to because someone got me into them.

I can go down the list of all the bands I listen to and connect them with the person who put the cd in and said "Listen to this"

When my brothers came home for college they also brought alot of goth rock with them. so I got into the banshees, the cure and later on bauhaus from them. as well as music for the masses by depeche mode because it was out at the time. what a great album.

You need new friends.

My friend Nicki got me into the Smiths, Broken Social Scene, the Faint, and more.

That's about it, actually. My other friends either already listened to the same bands as me or never heard of the bands I listened to. They could try to turn me onto bands like the Foo Fighters or the Beatles but they'd be wasting their time.
