Adore is way better. Machina was the beginning of the end of the Pumpkins for me. Billy fucked up his guitar tones and started singing through his nose.

Machina by miles, pathetic attempt to sway the vote with fake alt accounts.

I like both, but I think Adore is the superior album.

I probably listen to Machina more, because it has more rawkers, and I feel like I can only put on Adore when I can really sit down and listen to it instead of just listening to music on the bus or whatever.

Adore. Machina has poor production and some songs lack quality.

I think Billy corrected Jay Leno once "the right pronunciation is Mah-kin-ah", but since then he gave up and also calls it Masheena.

I feel the same way, but that could just be because everyone I've ever heard say the album name out loud has said ma-SHEEN-ah, whether that's correct or not

Machina, counting both. Just tons and tons of stuff, some really great numbers. Love Adore and all, just love Machina more.

I don't listen to either much these days. They're quite different albums, but I find Adore more interesting lyrically.

Adore is superior. The Machina songs didn’t translate well from the great Arising versions to the studio. I like Machina but it’s still muddy and bloated.

Machina if you ignore people who can't stop moaning about the Arising Tour.

Good idea to compare these albums now, not knowing yet the restored and completed version of Machina.

Adore by a mile. On its own, Machina is an unfocused mess. Machina is just muddy production and lyrically dull. Adore is focused emotion and amazingly produced with much better songwriting. The whole story of Machina, what it could have been, makes it seem bigger and better than it really is. Honestly, I couldn't make it through most of the album. I try to listen to Machina again and again and it leaves me bored.

Don't forget, to post your 75. attempt of a song suggestion list for the restored Machina album first...

Ban me, doesn't change the fact that Machina is the weakest album from the original line up. Adore is such an honest and open and beautiful album. It's Billy really opening himself up. You feel something. That album is pure emotion. At least with Adore and the albums before it, Billy had something to say that you could actually connect with. Machina's story, not so much.

Machina was the beginning of the end. Perhaps if Billy completely remixes tracks or swaps out original album versions with better ones, then maybe it could become stronger. But lyrically, I don't think that is gonna change. He lost something lyrically with Machina and the albums that followed. With Machina he took the concept too far where I felt the humanity was lost for theatrics. I haven't heard him open up the way he did since Adore.

I just can't connect to Machina.

I really like the lyrics on Machina in particular. Heavy Metal Machine is thought provoking. This Time is moving, musically and lyrically. Blue Skies is lyrically rich. And the rest of the songs at least have a clearly identifiable theme, and as someone who has tried to write lyrics I can appreciate how hard it is to stay focused long enough to get even one song done. The phrases and the phrasing also seem to fit the lyrics really well, even better than some of the previous albums, where it often sounded like he'd shoe horn the words to the music, so even though these songs don't butter everyone muffins, they demonstrate mastery of song craft all the same.

On the other hand, Siamese Dream, I get the feeling people consider that to have had good lyrics, but they seem very cryptic by contrast. On the one hand, they seem very personal, but on the other, they're so personal that they don't mean anything to anyone but Billy.

I'm surprised people even give a shit about lyrics in the first place. Music is more about a feeling, the extent to which it's also poetic is incidental, imo.

Of course lyrics are important. Give me an instrumental Machina then. The Pumpkins aren't the type of band like Sigur Ros where the words are made up nonsense in place to instill an emotion. With a band like The Pumpkins, the lyrics are pretty important. If you're gonna sing and shout over a song, it better make me feel something. I don't know how you cannot give a shit about lyrics. Perhaps the Pumpkins should be an instrumental band. It could help. Focus on the music because lyrically Billy hasn't been at his strongest for a long time.
