And yeah, I am a teenager who is a very lazy music fan. I don't get mad when my favorite bands don't make progress. If they operate with an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, I really don't mind. Although it will be a little disappointing if the whole album is like Lateralus. 'Cause their first three albums were pretty different from each other. or, different enough to notice, anyway.

I'm not bashing him for not being as good as other guitarists, but rather for not even trying to get better. He is a really creative guy and sometimes makes really great stuff with the limits he has, but now it's just getting really lame.

That said, this is the best Tool song I've ever heard. This is similar to saying, this is the least smelly shit I've ever taken. I'm no Tool fan but it does sound really similar to their previous stuff I've heard, save the boring ass 10 minute repetitive tom drum intros.

From what you've posted I can tell you haven't heard much of Opiate, Undertow or Aenima.

At least you can tell his style apart from what else is out there. Its good to learn from other peoples styles and build on that musically but not if you can never develop one of your own. Also I don't think every rock song needs a guitar solo, goodness. I think the ones he does throw in there though fit their respective songs very well. Not everyone lives to shred like you pal.

This song would probably be cool live, but as a single...? I like the ending and the part before the laughable "la/lie la/lie la/lie" section. I dunno, I love maynard's voice but for some reason he sounds different in this song. Maybe I just haven't listened to Tool in a long time.

Tool is my favorite band along with SP. After hearing Vicarious several more times, I like it alot and feel that it will be the "Schism" of the album, not amazing, but a solid leadoff single.
