For a long time Crush was one of those ho-hum songs for me that always got the skip button. The bassline rubbed me the wrong way, especially at the very beginning, and at this point on Gish I'm kind of in a hurry to get to Snail.

But as time passed and I grew more mature (or... older, at the very least) Crush grew on me and I was able to appreciate its beautiful lyrical and melodic nuances. It's not exactly a favorite, but I'm always happy when I listen to it now.

I actually love Crush's bassline. I think it's... unique. And skipgo's right... everything about this is just whispy. I think it gave us (or you, rather, since I was born the same year Gish came out) a glimpse into the dreaminess of SD before SD existed. Kinda a preview of what was to come. But it doesn't take away from what is wonderful about Gish. It's still got the Gish-like lyrics.

I love this sooooooooooooong

I heard them play "Crush" on 4/21/00. It was pretty sweet. I wasn't aware at the time they had been playing it on that tour. Made my night. It was also the last time they played that song in the U.S.

Nope. It was Melissa.

I never got to see the original four. The first two times was without Jimmy, the next four times were without D'arcy and the last time was SP2.

it's suffer day, people.
i have some stuff to say about it but i actually have a lot of work to do at my job today (i know, crazy concept) so i don't have time to be mucking about on netphoria. Let's have some suffer talk. recorder solo! woohoo!

another religious reference (i am one, siva, 'all that you suffer is all that you are) i really got the impression that billy was totally into some trippy drugs and into figuring out what he believed in at this phase in his life. this may be the song that gets stuck in my head the most from gish, whenever i am playing guitar that basic riff always seems to pop up unbidden. really like the walking bass right before the solo

Suffer has some of my favorite lyrics, but for some reason I've just never really been able to get into it. When I really sit down and listen to it, I'm impressed by all the musical and lyrical aspects of it. But it's not a song I can have on in the background.

I enjoy the flute (?) interlude at 3:48; it's so 60s-rock sounding. It's hard for me to appreciate this song to the fullest, though, with my anticipation for Snail coming up next.

That's also got something to do with my lack of love for this song, I'm sure.

I really dig Tricky's album Maxinquaye. When I first heard it, I wasn't aware that he sampled "Suffer" for his track, "Pumpkin". I about lost my shit. It's pretty sweet, actually.

it helps if you've heard them but is not a strict requirement... what does the title Suffer evoke for you, exactlythesame? i guess it is probably a real hard-pounding number with highly personal lyrics... kind of a mix between FA Stomp and Promise.

November 29
Suffer

i find this song hypnotyzing
all billy needed was one chord for the entire first minute
the swirl in a circle bass line.... mmmm
"i will dream, all may seem"

the lyrics in this song are prrrfect
such romantic softness
"your dream will be, to dream with me"
the flute solo is other worldly.... starts off as a hint of reverbing feedback... mmm
"will you wait? yes i will. I've will wait for you"
the song structure as a slow tension builder fits perfectly at this point in the album
yet lyricly the development from the first line to the last is HUGE
"All that you suffer is all that you are " > "To late to recover"

regardless of the "religious" exploration he's obviously doing on gish
this song really emphasizes that his "own" path is the most important one

do clense your little life, takes more then time

as lame as it sounds but
this song reminds me billy's dedication to his audience
his patience, his suffering
no other song on gish is this direct.

snail was my favorite song from gish for a really really really long time, i was very happy that they were playing it during the machina era tour. the lyrics, especially the beginning show how trippy and psycodelic billy was - very hippy but also rawk

easily my favorite from gish. The first few years I was into this band, I didn't have contact with other sp fans because there wasn't much of an internet to speak of (it was there i guess, but people weren't using it the way the do now). I had no idea Snail was so universally loved, but I'm happy to find out that it is.

Snail!!!!!

I love this song so, so much. The relaxed intro, which leads into the awesome opening solo, then going into "Flower, seize the hour..." To this day I have no clue what the lyrics mean but there's some weird emotional resonance there, I love it. Then there's 5 minutes of awesomeness which leads into the beautiful outro riff... This song is absolute perfection.

According to iTunes, I listen to Snail almost more than any other Pumpkins song (it's in the #2 spot in the Play Count).

Snail is one of Billy's favorites as well. I was so happy when I heard him say it my brain melted, because musicians never seem to like their songs that I love the most.
