this lineup actually had the potential to be something relatively new-sounding and dare i say... "hip"

biggest caveat wasn't Byrne, it was Corgan's croaking & lame lyrics. musically they were kinda cool

Have we finally reached the point where we look fondly of Byrne?

not quite, i'm just saying his role as the "fall man" for most of that era was a bit disproportionate

well first off, he spelt it "blawg"

imagine that, a kid who spells his blog "blawg" just to be cute, & silly, being crushed by the fist & gargantuan might of the Chief Bald Lord

Actually, on that note, the TbK actually had some goodwill from the general public when it was announced, and even the first two or three songs. A lot of publications even gave Corgan some credit for putting his money where his mouth was in terms of the free release model. It was the horrible output and the months-long delays between the songs that really killed any chances the project had of success.

I mean, I remember the general consensus, among mainstream music publications and the forums, was that "A Stitch in Time" was actually one of the strongest songs he'd written in years (at the very least since Zwan, if not the last days of SP1). Unfortunately, it was sandwiched between "Widow Wake My Mind" and "Astral Planes."

absolutely not. I was watching an old 2010 performance of Soma, and you can barely hear billy's guitar solo because mike byrne won't shut the fuck up with the bam bam fills.

Oceania would have been a classic amongst the the other classics imo if it had better drums. Jimmy obviously would've been the ultimate but jesus why not just hire Matt Walker for recording and just have bam bam do the touring?

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Jimmy in the studio and the title track being fleshed out completely and it would have been another top album.

I still find Corgan’s lightly veiled swipe at Mikey via praising Tommy Lee (“doesn’t need coaching”) epic.

Yeah, he needed some coaching Bill. You hired a teenage McDonald’s employee.

No, how about we don’t make fun of a kid whose career was trashed by a manipulative sociopath

Nobody is saying Byrne was good, just that Corgan destroyed the kid

It’s not actually sad. This kid has the time of his life playing in a huge rock band. I suppose it’s a little melancholy that it all ended. Mikey’s never gonna have an experience like this again. But certainly better to have done it for a couple years than not at all.

If Billy met Bryne when he met Jimmy... alternate universe. End of discussion.

It was sad when Billy made a huge fuss forcing Byrne cancel a tour (or demoing) with his band so he'd be available for Billy, and then Billy just never showed up, just wanted to flex his power over the little guy. "You can't do your little project, I won't support you, plus surprise I didn't even need you anyway: know your place."

Poor victim, Corgan, bullied again by the young, liberal, hipster geeks.

Eh, I sort of side with Billy. You're in the biggest band you could ever hope to be in. Like even in the days of the early 2010's touring on the Pumpkins level is rare for bands, even great bands. What does Nicole and Bammy do? They wanna jam in the slums with their buddies. Look at Jeff, he didn't stray and is still on the mighty SP's payroll to this day.

Nicole: "We went there to write the record that I was on with them...Oceania...we went to Sedona, Arizona to write, so Meg came along with me."

Interviewer: "That band (SP) writes together???"

Nicole: "Ehhhhhhh....well, that's tricky."

Interviewer: "You don't have to talk about it."

Nicole: [laughing] "...that was tricky...we tried!...we definitely tried."

Meghan Toohey: "It didn't quite work out for them but for me it was like a carthardic experience."

---

2012:

“The whole thing fell apart when Mike told me we had to cancel because Billy Corgan was like, ‘Oh, we have to be doing demos in Los Angeles during the time that you’re supposed to be on tour.’ And he told him super last minute in Portugal. So I had to cancel all the dates,” Scott says. “And the crappy thing is they didn’t even go to do demos. Mike was home during the time we were supposed to go on tour.”

For his part, Scott doesn’t begrudge Byrne’s dominance of the band’s schedule. Thankfully, Scott isn’t just wasting away when Byrne is traversing the globe with Corgan and company. He studies electrical engineering at the University of Portland and eventually plans to use what he’s learning to build amps and pedals.

For now, Scott is fine being “that guy in the band with The Smashing Pumpkins drummer.”

“I do my best not to trade on his name and be like, ‘Hey, he’s in The Smashing Pumpkins, so we deserve this.’ I do my best not to use his job as a way to launch this band,” Scott says, starting to laugh. “Because I really think that people who are into The Smashing Pumpkins would f---ing hate Bearcubbin’.”

Destroyed career? He was never going to have one.. not in music. He got lucky and had 4 years of playing in a huge rock band. That’s about as much as any mediocre talent suburban teenage kid could hope for.

Maybe mike destroyed his own chances. Jumping in to that audition at 19 years old, clearly not ready... always a few steps behind for that entire 4 years.

I swear billy hired a 19 year old nobody to just piss jimmy off.. if there was any diabolical intent on his side. Mike was just too starstruck to know better.

This

Also, if it actually panned out and by some miracle mike had been capable to do the job, big willie could dominate and control him in a way he could never do with a peer like jimmy

It was a pretty solid ploy for an evil genius, really
