i taped it with media center...
they're only on for a 12 mins segment, so i doubt you guys want the entire hour with commercials (got that was painful to watch in the entirety)

i'll snip off the edges and upload it.
shouldn't be too long now.
hope .wmv file is ok..

billy comes off half smart, half whiny as usual.
no shocking statements we haven't heard before
just your usual "soundbites"... and he calls them soundbites too.
"want to hear my soundbite about guitar hero??? 'you don't play guitar hero when you are a guitar hero'"
all eager and proud of himself for being clever...
love him anyways

he's looking frail.

it was only 12 minutes on the actual show? It's like 23 on the website, plus George screws up at the end lol.

I was fairly impressed overall. As always, Billy (and Jimmy) has coherent, topical things to say about other people, but is vague in the extreme when it comes to his own band.

It was pretty Woodstock when he was talking about "we are who we ARE, so it's, like, the band is who we are, so it's, like, we CAN'T leave the band, because, like, man, it's just what we do!" Typical artistic bullshit.

But I liked when he was talking about how, even when they "got it right" during SD/MCIS era, they didn't learn the right lessons from that.

And it was interesting when he said they can't just write 2 or 3 amazing songs, they have to write 10 songs, and 2 or 3 of them will be great (or something to that extent).

I thought Billy was almost getting choked up when he was talking about the record companies....it's like he was talking about his grandfather being in Dachau or something. I thought he was going to have tears of rage in his eyes, real talk.

12 mins,
i double checked,
they only start up 41mins into the episode, by the time they're done chatting it's time for a commercial break & a wrap up and that's the end of the hour.

here's the upload of the 12 mins that I saw airing.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/azl4l4

i'll keep the entire episode (1.2gb) if someone is interested.
do media center files have drm or some shit?
i don't know shit about video files except if they work in VLC, which passes my A-Ok test.

edit: the link should now be good...

the website version is "Uncut" ,
so that's probably why it's longer.

That was really good. You wonder at the amount of people who have never heard the truth about how record companies treat artists. We seem to take it for granted as Pumpkinites cause we've heard it all before but maybe he blew a couple minds?

I guess most folks wouldn't really give a shit.

I really enjoyed that.

Also, Jimmy seems to be anti-government - so that's cool.

That interviewer sucked. He let Bill off easy on the "sell out" question.

Bill just did his usual "spin" on shit like the "reunion shows" controversy. Making fun of those who want to hear old songs that they lost their virginity to (as if those are the only people who want to hear those songs) and the blogger thing was pathetic. It's been talked about already. Nothing new to really discuss.

Well, thats the first time I really started to dislike Jimmy since this whole thing started. He was more vocal, and spouting off Bill talking points. Came off as an asshole.

For the most part it was a pretty good interview. When Billy referenced the 20th Anniversary tour it seems as though he was talking in present tense. So it is likely the interview took place in early Nov when they were in Toronto.

It was pretty interesting to hear them talk shortly about zwan. and that billy mentions that it's THE smashing pumpkins. Something I recall people always talking about after MCIS came out and the "the" came out.

I liked the we only come out at night story. And that billy checks the site to read what people has to say.

When Billy said "do the Zero dance" during the interview it made me laugh and smile.

Of course I was sad that it was a lot of the same info that anyone who has followed a person already knew. But I think it painted a good picture for anyone who didn't know much about the band.

However, when he spoke about "the zero dance" and the Zero shirt was a thing of the past and how he can't "bring it back" I wondered:::

although George did say something like "obviously you do care about what the fans think", which was obvious from the way Billy kept going on and on about it. lol

I just think it's fucking sad that he thinks there are no fans out there who want to listen to new stuff. I'm not going to say i don't want to hear the old stuff, because i do. But I equally download and buy the new stuff to see what its like, some of which i'll listen to and others which i won't.

Of course they can play what they want at concerts and thats fine, but there seems to be very little respect in general for the people who pay money to listen to and go and see them.

my hope is that they will continue to write those 40 songs and then sell what they feel is the best 10 songs (string over a few years). But maybe give away the other 30 for free

but i can see how that would be consider a bad investment

i really don't think he's understanding it right when he says that everyone selects 2 or 3 songs from an album and never plays the others again. he selects as proof reactions of people at the concerts.

i think the idea is that when you strongly hold a belief, you're going to seek out evidence to support it. and so when he believes no one listens to anything other than a few select songs, he's going to look out and notice some people seeming apathetic and place undue emphasis on them, or project their reactions (plenty of which could be misinterpreted in the first place) onto a much larger population. while ignoring or discounting those reacting positively, because those reactions don't support his belief.

and if he were to go down the road of 2 or 3 songs a year like he said (if i heard that right), i don't think that'll go well. when in the last 10 years have bill and the fans seen eye to eye on what songs are good?

all of that said, i can't really blame him for being frustrated. i'd be pretty displeased if my fans were a bunch of fucks!!! you hear that?? you fucks!!!

He's referring to the mainstream audience, not Pumpkins fans. I see it all the time. Most bands have a small amount of material that crosses over to the mainstream (e.g. a couple of songs on an album). I'm guilty of having a few tracks from bands who I don't care for other than a couple of singles. I even have a handful of CDs that I have ripped off a few songs into MP3 and never so much as looked at the disc again. In the past it was easier (at least in Australia) to buy a full album than to get singles (before Napster and iTunes). Now people can easily buy a single without b-sides (which might get you interested in the band more).

Most people think of the Pumpkins the way you think of any band you don't know much about but like those two songs you've heard on the radio.

I think the Pumpkins' work is particularly prone to this as they are not mainstream enough for many people, but they have a few songs that were bona fide hits and/or have real mainstream appeal (BWBW, Disarm).

Hell, judging by the whining 12-year-olds on Netphoria, most 'fans' only listen to a couple of songs on any Corgan album since Adore.

I agree with you about not liking the sound of 3 songs a year. To me the Pumpkins are an album band. What makes many of their songs important to me is their context within an album. I would probably never have listened to half the songs on MCIS a second time if they weren't a part of a larger piece of music. Now I love pretty much every song on that album.

about the 2-3 song thing...
while selling music on itunes, it's easy to get a sales report for individual songs vs albums, which individual songs...
and myspace players make it even easier to see exactly how many song plays each track gets
plus features like last.fm & itunes genius collecting clouds of information
this easy "at hand" data doesn't need any complex number crunching to understand
billy probably isn't coming to these conclusions for delusional reasons.

billy only ares about his mainstream populous fans. (what was the words he used?)
we're clearly the fringe.
