I dealt with some racism last summer. As you know I live and work on a reservation. A. was getting picked on by some native boys.. and although she's part native, she's fair skinned. These boys were calling her white bitch..... shoving her off her bike.. kicking at her, etc. I found out where they live, and went to talk to their parents... turns out the parents were just has horrible as their children. The mother flipped out and threatened to kill me if I ever stepped onto her property again.

So what did I do? Made a police report.... and every time the police went to their door they wouldn't answer. Nothing came of it... and then my tires got stabbed. It's been quiet since.

But that whole ordeal has changed A. in the way that she used to feel free to ride her bike everywhere unafraid around the neighborhood...this summer I got her into an art and swim class, and she's doing better but she will not ride her bike down the street anymore. Pisses me off.

You're right, that makes these cases and those similar perfectly alright. What's right in society should only pertain to some, not all.

Not that it matters regarding the kid who said it, but did your nephew's black heritage come from a country where the slur n word was never a thing? I ask this because you mentioned the Hispanic heritage as well, and I guess that makes a difference. The kid was wrong to say it, obviously, but offense can maybe be reduced if your nephew's heritage doesn't really coincide with slavery in the US. Then again, it probably doesn't matter when your nephew is raised in the US where he is likely to be a target of racism regardless.

It's strange how these things work, people do say "black" in Brazil but it has racist connotations and it was the term the Portuguese used to refer to slaves (it also has an affectionate connotation in the diminutive, which may be confusing for foreigners). The race is negro, very close to the racist n word in anglophone countries.

Ehhh it depends on the person or situation. In more "professional" or formal situations, people stick with "African American". I happen to think that shit is pandering and awkward. I've only heard white people who are trying too hard to be "textbook pc" ay that.

I say black, or if in context of political conversations, black Americans. Person of Color also works for all non-whites. I'm sure I'm wrong on this though so we'll wait for the language police before we know for sure.
