last year this guy who I used to play with in high school but who was never really committed and only plays once in awhile, he asked me to go to guitar center and help him pick out a new guitar. so we go there and then he starts this spiel about how his guitar wonder dad only believes in buying cheap guitars because it doesn't make a difference etc etc I was like oh boy ok well you can buy a cheap guitar but it's just not going to sound how you think it is going to sound.

he didn't really want my advice it turned out as much as he wanted me to validate his belief that this total piece of shit starter Epi Les Paul was a great guitar. I played it and told him honestly it was a piece of crap but he wouldn't listen because his dad told him it was a great instrument. He took it home and after a few weeks he returned it. Even the fucking hardware was so cheap it didn't work correctly, like the god damn tuners would just continuously slip forever

I'm sure you know this but even if you only played like 15 minutes a day, you would be able to play some shit in a few months' time

Guitar Center has bad mojo all around

years ago I went there with 28if cause he was gonna buy this fender amp. The one they had in stock was broken, like the reverb was fucked or something can't remember exactly. 28if was like yeah obviously I'm not going to buy this broken amp can you order another one

and the guy was like no. we have to sell this one before we can order another one

it was much easier to learn to play guitar in the 90s when all the popular songs were written by idiots

I truly believe anyone can learn the guitar, at least a little bit. If you were willing to force yourself to practice regularly, you would learn to play

because i've "forced" myself to practice several times for between 2-3 months with the same results: can't play anything

i ask for advice on what to practice & you get 10 different answers. one of the most common is "idk just play it" which is helpful

i don't know what to tell you, while it would be nice to believe that everyone can do everything it seems to not be the case

you said you only played for a short time. I also remember you being discouraged that everyone was telling you that you would have to learn to play stuff like chords and learn the notes before you could start pulling out insane noisy shit like the woman from Joy Formidable.

practice every day for a few months, you will get better. even if you feel like you have no natural musical ability, you will still get better. I'm terrible with my hands and I suck at math and I managed to learn guitar just by practicing a little bit every day over years

You just need to lower your standards and play something easy that you don't necessarily like because you may grow to like it in time.

i don't want to be one of those guys but as far as music goes, you can play what you want. if you can't play what you like, that might be a blessing. you can create your own language.

music is a language. spend enough time with it and it starts to make sense.

i still subscribe to the jad fair philosophy (elph can back me up) where he says "there's only one chord: the power cord." and "there's only two kinds of songs: monster songs and love songs."

you have to figure out what you end game is. if you want to play other peples songs that might be difficult but if you want to mangle and distort your own feelings that's a bit easier. just blow off steam.

widdley widdley wow

like i thought maybe i should be a writer because i've had a couple people say i was good at it, unlike everything else in the world, but i'm mostly blocked all the time. i tried to write again (twice a week i said!) and i did for a little bit, like three weeks or so, and then i ended up hating all the stupid shit i wrote & now i just can't even think of a single fucking thing worth writing about

i was great at drawing - got an art school scholarship - and everyone said "hey you should get into graphic design because computers are becoming popular" and now look at me/the industry

this might piss you off, but this sounds a lot like when old people so they "can't" learn to use a computer because it's too hard or their brains "don't work like that" or something

you may have created a mental block because of anxiety. everyone is this way with some things. like learning a computer or driving a car or learning a language, playing an instrument is basically a mechanical task which requires you to learn a system of symbols and tools and repetition builds the roads in our brain that we need to do it faster and easier over time.

if you ever decide to go back, which I encourage you to do because I don't believe you just literally "can't" learn it, you should take lessons for awhile so someone can help you get the basics down and give you structure to practice around.
