Michael Jackson's sold over 100 million albums...in one album. That's a completely ludicrous comparison.

goddamn this shit.
i am not comparing Michael Jackson to Pearl Jam. I am telling you that current popularity does not necessarily equate to higher ticket sales. im done with this. |

Well, how about the fact that they were popular in very different music eras? Pearl Jam hasn't cracked a million in like a decade. You can't compare album sales from one era to the next, that just doesn't work.

yes, being popular in different eras. Thank you! you've just proven my point. CURRENT popularity vs HISTORICAL popularity.
if Michael Jackson announced a World Tour tomorrow, those shows would sell out in an instant. |

selling 60 Million albums means that Pearl Jam are a pretty huge band. the Pumpkins sold around 19 million in the US alone, so lets say 25-30 million worldwide, ok? Thats HALF of Pearl Jams number.

Yes, you're saying that Michael Jackson is not popular NOW. I agree, to an extent. Despite him not being popular NOW, he was popular THEN, so he still fills seats. However, I'm saying that Michael Jackson's level of popularity was so great that it blurs any NOW-THEN distinction. Pearl Jam has never reached a level where their popularity would span generations. They had their time, and now they play regular arena shows and enjoy middling album sales. Like the Smashing Pumpkins.

One thing Radiohead has goin' for it that other bands mentioned in this thread, like SP & PJ don't, is the fact that their current material is being raved about by everyone, from music critics, RH's fans, and casual fans (the buzz of the internet release helped also). Aside from the talk of how much they all love the name-your-own-price deal that the band did, everyone that's heard this album is in agreement that it's great stuff. When a band's current album is touted so highly, it will only help them to sellout wherever they play. So unlike SP & PJ, whose recent albums were viewed as "Meh, okay" by most people or even slammed by longtime fans, :cough: Netphoria :cough:, those who are thinkin' about seeing RH will be just as eager to hear stuff from In Rainbows as the classic or rare songs, thus making 'em more willing to go to the show.

Edit: Not that it is as good as In Rainbows, but it certainly wasn't received as coolly as you imply. |

I don't know, I just know the latest one got a fair amount of praise dumped onto it, and I also know it is quite popular amongst the fans too. Whereas something like Zeitgeist is pretty much agreed to be a mediocre effort.
