Default Was Billy listening to Sneaker Pimps / Massive Attack when he came up with Pug?

I wonder what inspired the song Pug. Maybe it was Tricky.

nah alot of the adore era stuff had the stamp of late 90s electronica and industrial on it. as much as i like that era it probably sounds the most "dated", if you want to get into semantics

Adore happened in that brief moment after alternative and before nu-metal where electronica was deemed the future of rock.

According to James Iha, another song Cameron initially played on, 'Pug', started life as "a minor key blues death march" before Corgan programmed a drum machine and employed a number of synths.

Commenting on the band's approach to recording, Rubin told Rolling Stone: "If you have a great song, you can make 20 different records out of it. This is one of the things I told Billy about the rest of the album. The songs are so good that there isn't necessarily a right way to do them. There is no quintessential version, just the one you're in the mood to make."

Horrible times! I have nothing against electronica, but I didn't like that sudden shift of fashion in the media at the time. All of a sudden, there was no place for "alternative" sounds the way there had been for the last few years. Even if it had become a formula, I craved for those guitar sounds and type of production, and I hated the posture and attitude from the press and bands alike, "guitars are dead, rock is dead, electronics are the way"
The funny thing is that many of these bands are forgotten now (I was just reminded of Lunatic Calm) and to me; there's not much that sounds as dated as a Prodigy or the Chemical Bros record. Not bad for something that was "the future of music"

That said, it's a damn shame the backlash the Pumpkins got with "Adore", it's a beautiful album, probably ahead of its time actually (it sounds quite fresh to me now, unlike Order 66!). It did gain them a brand new audience, at least in Europe (I've met quite a few people who got into the band around "Adore"...and remember a few who moved on when "Adore" came out ).

Moby did a really fine album before his elevator music days. A very disjointed album with many industrial sounding rockers, punk influences, and nice ambient music. It's called "Animal Rights" and came out in 96 (after the "1979" remix as I remember correctly).

Oh, and don't forget the Spawn soundtrack, which was literally rock bands collaborating with electronica acts.

Behold! The Future of Rock:

Yeah! That's exactly what this album was.

Forget Bush, forget that EVEN Bush had a remix album around that time
