The whole "celebrity politics" things seems like the natural conclusion of American politics and entertainment being mixed.
Even the current coverage of Trump seems to make his every dumb tweet front-page news, with less substantial coverage of the issues that actually matter (the details of the Republican tax reform, the current intervention in Yemen, climate policy, the gutting of several federal agencies right-wingers aren't fond of, the fact that the executive branch still isn't staffed and is in shambles, his Israel-Palestine policy, including the fact that his Middle East team is staffed with fucking real-estate moguls and marketers instead of anybody with actual knowledge of the issues facing the region...) Like, I don't actually give much of a shit whether or not Trump has dementia. I don't care about his personal health. His actions speak for themselves, whether they are caused by a diagnosable illness or not. That speculation seems more like tabloid gossip. The tidbits about the dysfunctional White House are salacious and, I'm not gonna like, I read a little bit of that stuff, too, but it's nowhere near as important the actual policies. Even the Russia investigation... I obviously think there is merit to the investigation, and I bet it's going to turn up that Trump has been laundering money for the Russian mob for years, and did some Russian oligarchs a few favours in the White House. But while the investigation is important, the fact that it's dominating the news cycle, with every unverified anonymous claim getting coverage, seems to come at the expense of more substantial issues. Of course the case should be reported on, but maybe only when substantial information is released, instead of the media ignoring more important issues about actual policies in favour of RUUUUSSSIAAA! (as if the U.S. doesn't interfere with elections in much worse ways than making some fake internet articles). CNN and MSNBC embarrassed themselves when they reported on "evidence" that Assange gave Donny Jr. leaked documents before they were publicly released, neglecting to verify the date IN THE VERY HEADER OF THE EMAIL that showed that it was sent ten days after they reported it was, and after the documents were already publicly available. What's more, the email was sent from a random Gmail account that could have been anybody. There very well may have been collusion between Assange and the Trump campaign (we have other pretty convincing evidence this is so), but such sloppy reporting, which was never even properly retracted, just fuels Trump's "FAKE NEWS" claims. |

One great thing about the investigation, though, is that it's hilarious to see right-wingers who have approved of the FBI stomping on civil rights and targeting politically inconvenient groups for years suddenly start to point out that the FBI is an authoritarian threat to democracy now that powerful right-wingers are being targeted. Sean Hannity giving omens about the FBI soon kicking people's doors down and detaining people, as if this hasn't already been happening since the '30s.
It's even funnier because, so far, Mueller's investigation has been pretty by-the-book. There's no comparison between this and what the FBI did to, say, African-American activist groups in the '60s. |

One of the first thoughts I had when Trump won (enveloped as it was by all-pervasive thoughts about how we've officially failed as a species) was essentially, "Oh, God. Reality television and the generally provocative antics of a vacuous narcissist will now be seen as a path to the presidency by opportunistic scum on both sides of the political spectrum."
After Trump's run at governing so far, however, would either of the major parties really want to get behind another candidate like this? |

"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?"
- President Donald J. Trump This was reportedly said in reference to Haiti and unspecified African states. It was followed by the suggestion that the United States should focus on bringing more people in from countries such as Norway, whose prime minister he'd met the day before. |

I gotta say, I find it slightly amusing when I see Americans who are actively hoping for their president to fail... It's almost as if people would rather Trump destroy the nation than have to admit that he did a pretty good job.

Even as dumb and awful as George W Bush was/is, I don't recall people actually wanting him to fall flat on his face.. But with Trump there's this whole new insanity brewing with liberal people. I just don't get it.

I honestly don't think that the half of you guys even know what a racist is. I live in probably the most diverse country in the world, and I embrace it and enjoy it. To judge a man or a lady based on their ancestry is the most senseless thing a mind could do. Look, Trump may have used a few racist dog whistles to rally his troops but none of that interests me in the slightest. It's his stance on Washington and the deep state that drew me to him. |

Based on everything he built his platform on, why would any sensible American wish him success?
