Default Know what was a really lame move?

The other day, I went to toss on "Zeitgeist" - the song, not the album. The song itself is a gem, one of the major winners from that era. Strange that 3/4 of the b-sides from that album are better than nearly every song on the record. Anyways, I digress.

In my iTunes library (old man alert) I had ripped the standard red edition of the CD and the silver Deluxe Edition one which was released five months after the album. When I ripped my CD library a few years back, I just breezed past the purple and gold ones I had too and thought I had taken care of it all with the silver. Because, right, the silver was the limited edition deluxe Best Buy only thing, right?

Yeah, for some reason, that one has 3/4 of the b-sides and the whole album, but NOT the song "Zeitgeist". What a jerk move. There was plenty of real estate on the CD, but, yeah... when you're extending an olive branch after releasing 14 different colors of Zeit and putting it "all" on one silver deluxe... NOPE. Still gonna make you track down the purple one and keep that thing around somehow.

OK, sorry, I'll go back to 2008 albums and technology now... cue "living in the pass" remarks...

Yeah that was a bit of a dick move. I wonder what his rationale behind that was?

A cheaper and less redundant alternative would be to buy whatever single had the song Zeitgeist as a b-side.

the reasoning was simple. Box stores buy and promote music in huge volumes. SP offered different box stores different bonus tracks making their release an exclusive so they bought more volume.
The trick worked.

But in the end they had to liquidate the records at a deep discount.
The trick didn't work next time.

Reprise records has a history of offering different versions of an album, as they did with Zeitgeist. I doubt was Corgan who had that idea, and was most likely in whatever contract he signed with them.

how can anyone still be shitting on Zeitgeist in a post-Teargarden world

in any case, i never really liked "Zeitgeist" the song nearly as much as everyone else seemed to, so I wasn't too bothered by this. still tho, don't feel bad about still using iTunes, the ol' boy's been withholding that one from the big streaming services for quite a minute!

Honestly, good call. Teargarden is the worst of all of Billy's projects by a long shot. I should have tapped out after Zeitgeist.

It's been somewhere on before, but I don't think Willy P is holding Zeitgeist and other records of streaming services himself.

I use Amazon Music and the only solo album they have available is ogilala. no Zeitgeist no future embrace, zwan or Oceania.

I think those records are all on WB Reprise and it's an issue with them. just something I noticed.

okay

I know in his Instagram Q&As he's at least implied, if not outright said, that he's the one keeping them off streaming, and yeah, it's something to do with a dispute with that record label

But you never know with the ol' scamp if he's fibbing

It wouldn't be the first time he's refused to release music due to a dispute with his label.

but like, who wins in this situation, lol. obviously those aren't the most popular Willy Corgan albums but they're at least something, worst case scenario they'd earn a little extra revenue for Warner whether they're dying for it or not. I feel like it has to be a BC thing

He's withholding them from streaming because he's insecure about them.

He knows they didn't sell, weren't critically-liked and netphoria pretty much hates them.
...and yet he doesn't know why. He can't hear the problems everybody else hears.

He has talked about remixing/remastering to fix the vocals, but on another day he'll say it was an artistic choice and slam the haters for not getting it, that his singing is the best it's been etc.

Bottom line: If he was confident in the product, he'd put it out there.

What's really pissing me off is that you can't download the Pumpkins B-Sides & Rarities anymore.
For what reason? There is nothing planned like the Shitgeist reissue that could justify it...

Billy had signed a 3 album deal with reprise in 2002. And they got Mary star, TFE and Zeitgeist. (all 3 are released on reprise).
The 2002 deal wasn't with zwan, but to Billy, so even after he disbanded zwan he still owed them 2 albums.
The deal probably had a limited clause for the online streaming. Once it expired they were open for renegotiation and billy is probably playing hardball.

Billy corgan has only signed single album deals since.

going into zeigeist with a 5 year old record deal that excluded the original SP members probably contributed to d'arcy and james staying away.

Did online streaming even exist in 2002?

yes.
artists have been signing 360 deals since the mid 90's
many young artists with zero leverage signed away streaming in perpetuity for nothing
