Even though I doubt that the label was expecting big sales, they probably shit their pants in a panic when it debuted at 183 or whatever it was. They probably said "sorry Billy, but this ain't gonna fly... It's gonna be sold under the name Billy Corgan". One has to imagine that Billy couldn't have been too happy about it. It's curious that he hasn't addressed it.

I wonder if the actual pressings will be changed as well... I'm guessing not.

Or who knows, maybe they thought with the Rubin connection that they might get lucky and catch lightning in a bottle. One things for sure, the last minute name change can't be perceived as anything but a panic move.

Pitchforks published a story about this

https://pitchfork.com/news/back-to-b...is-name-again/

Probably means a slew of mockery is coming Bills way.

They didn't give Rubin a giant pile of cash to record an album that would have zero impact. They also put a ton of work into getting press for this. Trust me all those articles and the NPR thing did not come without a ton of expensive PR work. People who think no one expected this album to do well are deluding themselves. A mountain of work went into promoting this. He made a fucking film for christ sake.

do we have proof it's not "doing well" beyond Billboard placements? Billy was right about positive buzz/exposure being more important these days than strictly sales

Unrelated, but this reminds me. This dude posted on r/SmashingPumpkins. He asked us if we had any questions for Billy. I asked him a question. Billy answered during the interview. Pretty cool interview imo, just google "WPC Billboard interview" or something.

I (strangely) felt kinda satisfied when he told Billy my username before he asked him my question

Days before the name drop:

q on cbc
2017/11/12
Billy Corgan, singer of the famous '90s alt-rock band the Smashing Pumpkins, is releasing his second solo record under a new moniker: his real name, William Patrick Corgan. He talks to Tom about his evolving career and if he still likes playing the old Smashing Pumpkins songs.

Only 3 of his songs have gone over 100k on Spotify despite of him just being on Rogan, The Late Late Show, Stern etc. The interest is simply not there. Him being a multiplatinum-selling, multi-grammy-winning artist that had Rick Rubin produce an album for him, those are pretty horrible numbers.

Doesn't really appeal to the generation, in general. It sucks IMO. With artists like Drake being at the top, it's hilarious how artists with the crappiest music make it to the top rn. Not a lot of people really take the time to really listen, I suppose.

Who cares. If Billy stopped caring about being popular and appealing to the bovine masses maybe he would actual produced something with artistic integrity and heart.

look at the melvins.

Billy Corgans always been about following what's popular though. That's the one key point that a lot of fans don't comprehend. I mean sure, he always did it his way. But it's not like he was ever some trailblazer or anything.

I think Ogilala is the first time that he wasn't actively looking for a hit... But at the same time he was following a tried and proven strategy that has worked before for people with floundering careers, so in a sense it was still a calculation to achieve some fame.

Bottom line is he only has one path for a chance at fame again. The only way to reinvigorate it is by doing a reunion. I think Billy knows this too. And if it goes off like gangbusters, he'll be in the public eye again and might have another chance at doing his own thing and have it get some attention.

LOL

His album is a carbon copy of dozens of popular indie rock bands out there right.

No one was expecting top 40.

They were expecting at least some audience though.

jokes on you b0lly, I re-tagged it Billy Corgan right after I downloaded it to have it with TFE. I care about my library more than your identity & rebellious complexes.
