on the beach is my favourite neil young album
has been for as long as i remember
is this an unusual opinion? i'm not really a "fan" of him, i don't follow what he does and i haven't heard any of his recent output. i just listen to the 60s/70s stuff a lot. and on the beach clearly stands out. who's with me? |

no its my favorite too
its been a common favorite among "indies" since it was sort of a "lost" album for a while but it really is the best my favorite song is see the sky about to rain very closely followed by ambulance blues |

I couldn't pick a favorite, depends on my mood. I'd say is top 5 for sure. The "blues" trilogy is fucking incredible, and the title track is soul raping

The lyrical progression of motion pictures is fantastic. For the Turnstiles is badass and raw. Walk on is jaunty and awesome, see the sky about to rain is pleasant, maybe the weakest track but still great.

My favorite parts of the album are the "solo" in Vampire blues (amazing anti-solo) and that one bendy fill in the on the beach solo over the chorus chords (3 minutes in check it out)

This thread made me go listen to the album again.
I never noticed that little "solo" in Vampire Blues before. |

I've had Ambulance Blues stuck in my head all night now, and I don't mind one bit

Funny, I'm a semi-big Neil fan, but even after seeing threads like this, I still just need to put more work into getting into this album. New 2013 goal for sure.

I don't know all of his 40 whatever albums, but On the Beach is in my top five or so of the ones I am familiar. Not my absolute favorite though. I don't think it is as good as Everybody Knows, Rust Never Sleeps, or Goldrush at least.
