Yeah, it depends. I had a prick boss who insisted on getting to work 5 minutes "early". Getting there at 7:57am was unacceptable. He's not managing anymore.

I resist American conceptions of timeliness because I hate them and I don't feel anyone has the right to monopolize my time. If I have to show up early for something to prepare that is fine, but I will not show up early to shit all the time just because it's considered polite to freely give more of my time than agreed upon to someone else. My time is valuable and it belongs to me.

Fashionably late they call it.

in other cases, being too early is considered impolite.

being five minutes late is not a good start to a job interview.
unless it's a job in fashion, i guess.

If someone is throwing a party at their place, and you don't know the host that well being early can lead to some very awkward conversation before everyone else arrives.

it's always better not to be early if it's a party at someone's house. at least that's how it goes here. the host might not be ready themselves.
i've heard that in germany, it's often expected to be on time or even early. weird.

i am habitually late for everything. so in recent years i have deliberately made a point of arriving 10-20 minutes early, mostly because this is the best way to avoid being late, which is way more annoying for others than being early is annoying for me.

plus, if you are early to a meeting with a lot of people this opens up opportunities for developing relationships with other people before getting down to business.

a while ago i roadie'd for a band that was basically all european and latin american. i got invited to the bandleader's christmas party at 5pm and it was just me and the bandleader until literally everyone else showed at 6:30pm.

it was awkward as hell

Yeah I always shoot for 30 minutes early for that reason and also because I just get anxious before I have to go anywhere and can't enjoy the time before I have to leave

This is true. I will show up later to casual events like this and with a dessert if appropriate

Although I don't like how time has become so very important and if I don't do anything I feel like I'm wasting it

like most normal people I try to not be late for things where it is important for me to be on time.

but I don't show up early for work to "look good" or shit like that. I'm just over it.

i tend to show up 5-10 minutes early for things i'm familiar with. doctors i've been to, therapy, etc. other things i usually am 15-20 minutes. work i always get to really early because i eat. breakfast in my car. my weekend ritual is leave the house at 5:20, go to work and get breakfast at the dunkin donuts in the parking lot. by this time it is 5:35ish and then i get out of my car at 5:55 and go punch in

Me too. One of the few perks of working a crappy job is that no one cares.

I'm very forgiving of people when they are late. Sometimes I think I let myself run late as a test of how forgiving other people are.

I think a rigid adherence to the timing of most social plans makes a gathering or meet up more awkward than people being late.

Let's say an event is booked for 1:00pm - 3:00pm. By the "five minutes early is on time" logic, we would consider it polite for everybody to be there by 12:55pm. People who arrive at 1:02pm, a mere 120 seconds after the designated start time, are already considered late.

People who arrive at 1:15pm without a good explanation (traffic incident, injury, force majeure, etc.) are probably considered rude.

At this stage, some of those people (we all know people like this) who organised their day around a 1:00pm-3:00pm agreed event time, feel annoyed by those who turned up fifteen minutes late. They begin to make assumptions about that person's character, about their upbringing, their values.

I do agree that it would be great if everybody could turn up at 12:55pm. But, you know. It would be great if every blue collar worker was paid a living wage for an honest day's work. It would be great if car sales people didn't lie. We don't live in a "it would be great if" kind of world. We live in a "some of the apes have turned against the others" kind of world, and in that setting, forgiving somebody for turning up to a place a certain number of minutes after the agreed time, might be more useful and human, than insisting that they have committed a wrong against you by not adequately prioritising the agreement that was made, to arrive at the destination, 5 minutes before the start time.
