do you think brothahi4l influenced the song directly?

Man, it's kinda depressing to be reminded that Original Smashing Pumpkins and post-2000 Smashing Pumpkins are kinda the same band (well, it could be argued that this isn't "the real SP," but I think semantic arguments about what makes a band a band are boring and fruitless, as there are no real objective criteria to appeal to, so I'm just going to call them "the same band" for the purposes of expediency).

It's like my brain just compartmentalizes this shit, and I can enjoy pre-2000 SP without even remembering what they've become.

I only really check out the new material as a curiosity to see what they are up to. And the only thing that has motivated me to do even that is having more of the original lineup back. I had stopped really checking out the current SP happenings a few years ago.

After a decade of this stuff, it's hard to see why people are still holding out hope that "the next release may be better" and the band will be worth following again. I'm perfectly happy to check out shit like the reissues and tours like the last one, playing the classic shit, but beyond that, if I look at new SP material, it's not really with any hopes or expectations. It's just kinda more, "lol, I wonder what my favourite band sounds like now. Oh wow, it's terrible, haha."

Yeah that was my experience with REM as well after Berry left.

"Hmm, Up is actually way better than I expected, not bad."

Each subsequent album was more meh that I think I listened to the last 2 maybe twice each.

The very last R.E.M. album was a pretty worthy goodbye. & they never stopped kicking unholy asses on the live stage - got to see 'em in '08 & it was fantastic

Loved the last single "We All Go Back to Where We Belong" but didn't like the last 3 albums. They were too good of a band to be terrible, I just usually don't listen to anything past Hi-Fi or maybe UP.

Definitely a great live band always.

i really like some tracks off Reveal - Around the Sun is almost unanimously considered their worst but even that one has a couple of salvageable tracks. Accelerate was alright, & as I said I really liked the last one. Haven't heard much from any of them since the split aside from maybe Michael Stipe occasionally making an "appearance" somewhere

Wow- that gives me hope.lol
2 more songs are NOT bad.

Looking forward to the 3 star reviews, but mostly to the run2me 2.0 song.

I know. This popped up on my YouTube today and I was taken aback by how powerful it was after listening to “Malta.” When the original four were on top of their game (like 91-96), they were a fucking wrecking ball of pure visceral emotion. They were goth, alternative, metal, prog, shoegaze, and pop all bundled together in big volatile mess. Billy’s excessive ego and weird aesthetic tastes were on full display but always tempered by a hip sense of restraint (D’Arcy would NOT have let “Knights of Malta” pass.) For a brief moment there, the stars aligned and Smashing Pumpkins had killer run that very few bands could ever hope to equal. It’s probably unfair of us to expect 2018 Billy to be able to do anything remotely that special ever again. It’s a different time and he has different people around him. But the extent to which he has fallen into excessively bad taste truly is shocking.

I thought Accelerate was fucking great and the last one was a HUGE let down. They should have just capped it with how kickass Accelerate is.

Really feels like Zeitgeist was the last time Corgan could write riffy "rawk" songs. Like, they are underwhelming and not up to par with past Pumpkins rockers, but they don't have that cringy try-hard dad-rock feel that more recent attempts to bring the heaviness, like "Solara" do. The songs that tend to be less embarrassing from the new material are the ones that don't try to be heavy, pulse-pounding anthems, and opt for being more mellow or something (which is why I think tracks like "Oceania" and "Silvery Sometimes" end up feeling more earnest than "Quasar" or "Solara").

The Zeitgeist rockers are better than the Machina rockers by miles.

Unfortunately his vocals sounded like ass.

Now that we have Trump and Malta, 2007 doesn’t seem so bad with George W and Zeitgeist. Who would have thought those would be the good old days?

Well it must be bad when a band disables its brand new single YouTube video's comments and makes the likes/dislikes tallies invisible in a day.

You think the sp (billy) disabled it because they are afraid of bad comments?

Comments/ratings are allowed only on the yesman.org upload of the material, hence the "amazing responses" they've all gotten re: Billson
