I was thinking about this and I wonder if what actually happened was, some fatcat studio executive who knows jackshit about music ordered one of his assistants to "get that popular band... smash something or another" to contribute music to the movie. And the assistant, thinking he meant Smashing Pumpkins, reached out to Billy and began negotiations. From there, the assistant played Bullet or some other heavy SP track for the exec, and the exec was like, "What the fuck? I didn't mean this band! Are you a fucking moron? Yeah, let's end the movie with Shrek and Fiona slitting their fucking wrists in despair. I meant the guys who sing that song about walking on the sun!" And then the studio withdrew their offer.

maybe it will be like the singles soundtrack reissue where billy will refuse to give them any tracks because they didn't promote his world hit enough when the soundtrack was originally released.

Reminds me of my friend who got the bands Soundgarden and Savage Garden confused when discussing grunge bands.
