or everyone involved secretly knew it sucked, whereas this at least has a decent chance of garnering public interest since they are 100% playing the hits

Tours like this usually do good in markets the first time, but then when they return no one cares again.

I've seen countless bands do the reunion jaunt and it's a smashing success and then they come back 2 or 3 years later on a different tour and it's like a half-full downsized venue with little fan enthusiasm. So there really is no longevity in a game plan like this. Only works as a 1 and done deal.

Depends. Ride reformed initially in 2015 for gigs, which they got rave reviews and lots of press for. But they followed up with a new, well-received album in 2017, which helped them out when it came to keeping up the touring. Granted, they are playing smaller venues, but the fans are engaged and they are playing places like Tokyo, where they've never played before.

If SP release a new album, which is clearly in the style of SP 1, and it is well received and sells well, "return to form" etc, then they half a chance they can keep the show on the road. They do need D'arcy in the line up though.

Stumbled upon this older post. I agree with this. The key to the success is the original members. With James back it has been a major arrow up. With D'arcy it could only help even further. As much as WPC talks and intellectualizes he should realize the formula to good music is the 4 original members. He should do a documentary on reconnecting with her. A sit down and talk things out.
In the history of the band, when 1 of those members is out the whole thing is off. It's been a fun year but can only keep moving up if she joins. Some will laugh at that but they also know its true,
