Default Zeitgeist has burned the lies off of my soul.

I've refrained from using the phrase even once since Jimmy unveiled it to the world, but...it's official.

Who wants a hug?

I'll take the hug in a friendly unsexual way... Like we were buddies or had went to the army together... Just that... cause I'm a dude

This isn't a hype list for me:

1. Siamese Dream
2. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
3. Zeitgeist
4. Machina II
5. Gish
6. Machina I
7. Adore

This is good stuff. The layered vocals kick ass.

The layered vocals are my least favorite part because it seems that the more layered they are, the more they overpower the music.

But the music makes up for it.

I'm not even attempting a list until I give it at least 1200 more listens.

You know, to be fair to the other albums.

Default Post your track by track review of Zeitgeist

1- Doomsday Clock- Bad choice of opening song. Reminds me too much of bodies (riff wise) and the chorus is cheese. 1/5

2- 7 Shades of Black- Best thing studio wise pumpkins related since machina. Pretty fucking dark. Reminds me why I like the pumpkins. Billys vocals are on point, guitar is on point, jimmy is on point. Everything you could want or hope for in a new pumpkins song. 5/5

3- Bleeding the Orchard- Sooooo much better in studio. Has that nice drone to it. 3:10 has that great epic build up and subtle delivery. 5/5

4- Thats the way (My love is)- Nothing remarkable. Almost a bit cookie cutter. This almost personifies how billy has managed to tone down his solo's from egotistical "rants on a guitar" into beautiful lead fills. Good song just nothing special 3/5

5- Tarantula- Not sure I would have made this the first single as its far from the most appealing song. However it's probably the most relevant for commercial radio. Nothing really to say 3/5

6- Starz - bleh much like death from above the vocals on the "we are stars" part is to trebbly and not on consistant with the rest of the song in terms of volume. 2nd half of the song saves the first half. Jimmy's offbeat breaks towards the end are a very welcome touched. (see 2:39) 2/5 (last half 4/5)

7- United States- Gonna be a big hit with the "newer crowd" and remind a lot of the older fans of the "jams" we were used to at the end of shows SD/MCIS era. The use of the pitch bender on the vocals is a nice touch. Nearly 10 mins and not gawdy. A first for Billy. 4/5

8- Neverlost- Token overly nasal soft song. Jimmy as a minimalist drummer is something I drool over. While he's great at being the great destroyer he is it's songs like this that make me love him. Just simple soft drums but little details that make the song. Also good to see Billy has learned to control his synths and not go batshit crazy (like he could have on this song) 3/5

9- Bring the light- Another song where the chrous vocals just seem slightly out of place with the rest of the song. The "bring the light" the first two verses are too high in volume. Later in the song they are balanced out by the rest of the song. Fantastic solo. More nice synth work. 4/5

10- (Come on) Lets go- Filler material through and through. 1/5

11- For God and Country- Sounding redundant here but yet another song where the second half dwarfs the first half. More synth loving from Billy (sounds like that Virus synth again?!??!) Kind of bland at first builds later into a decent song. The structure of it is kind of odd. 3/5

12- Pomp and Circumstances- I guess a good closing song but as a single song I'll pass. Sounds like it'd be a great closing to a "theme" album but despite the political undertones implemented by a few songs this isnt a theme album. 1/5

OVERALL: 35/60

A lot better than I had expected. 5 or 6 really great songs. The production and mixing in this album (vocally) fucking blows. Ultimately Billy signs off on this shit but there are a few songs that are ruined by shitty vocal arrangements and editing. Jimmy is consistant as ever. A lot of nice little broken beat treats and interesting fills from him. I was pleasently surprised that Billy has toned down the solos into mangeable constructive parts of his songs. I was also surprised that he used as many synths (and electronic elements) in the songs yet didnt go over the top once in the album. I was glad to see this wasnt the cock rock album that the first 2 singles led me to believe it would be.

I think this could have been one of the better come back albums ever made had a little more studio time been involved. I mean there wasnt much time from the newspaper article of "i want my band back" and the final mastered copy of this being made.

Assuming Billy and Jimmy continue making music under the pumpkins guise I'm thrilled at the prospect of future pumpkins releases.

I say all this as a jaded fan who hated everything post machina and one who was less than impressed with the live versions of most of these songs. As a studio album this is a good studio album and a great start to what is hopefully a sustained reincarnation of the pumpkins.

I'm kind of speechless... I really expected this to be mediocre, but I like it a lot. It gets me excited listening to it.

Default Can we all agree Pomp and Circumstance is bleh

Closing songs have always been somewhat of an epic strong point for the pumpkins. This one is crap

the guitar in the last minute is pretty good and saves this song from being truly bleh, up until that point it is kinda just blah....

Default The vocal arrangements/eq/mastering is shit at times

anyone else feel that on a few songs (stars namely) the vocal arrangement/eq'ing is absolute dog shit at times?

starz. wow. just, wow. I liked it okay live, but the studio version is incredible. I like the vocals in this one, they fit well. The drums are really outstanding on this album; not that i expected anything less from our man chamberlin, but man. He really delivers. I don't want to hear any more bullshit about how "old" these guys are. They still have it. On first listen, I already like Zeitgeist better than anything the band (or offshoot bands) have released since MCIS came out. I'm a very happy girl right now. Very happy indeed.

I really dig Neverlost, am i in the minority here?
