Pet Names
Do you like them? I know they can be demeaning for women so let's say that we're talking about use that is respectful and non-sexual. My heart melts any time someone calls me by a pet name. It immediately makes me feel more positively about a person even if I know nothing about them. You could probably get me to do a lot of things by coddling me and calling me baby. Is this common? What does it mean? Aside from the obvious, of course

I've never had a woman or a man use pet names with me.

I feel like it happens pretty often if you work in customer service. It seems like a southern thing?

Clover is a standard "plant name" and Victoria is the tinyier rat. Somehow that earns her a dainty, stuffy name

Kind of depends for me. Some women just kinda call everyone "sweetie" or "honey" or "sweetheart," or say things like "hey, handsome" jokingly. I dunno, it seems like it's just the way they talk, it doesn't seem to be in a disrespectful or belittling way, like in the way some men will call women those things in a kind of harassmenty (mmm, minty) way.
It probably sounds like I'm invoking a double standard when I say it's not weird when women do it to men, but I'm talking about those kindly old ladies, or that sassy diner waitress, or that southern belle. Y'know what I mean? I dunno, it's just different. |

oh lord. i went to ulta the other day for some mousse and the cashier kept calling the next customer "ulta babe". CAN I HELP THE NEXT ULTA BABE? and then at the register it got worse. he must have referred to me as gorgeous at least three times, but i assume he did it to everyone.
i like when old ladies call me doll or sugar. this only happens in texas. |

I'm with reprise. I hate hearing the word "baby". My first two boyfriends called me baby and by the time I met my husband I didn't want anything to do with that word.
My old boss the church minister often said "yeah baby!" when he was enthusiastic about things. Once I said "There's a cafe in Canberra that makes its own crumpets and they serve them with rhubarb jam, cream and candied bacon" and he said "Yeah baby!" and I was nearly sick in my mouth. It wasn't him. It was just the word. I'll probably never eat those now. |

baby is fine with me so long as it's my significant other saying it. strangers calling me baby pisses me the f off.
some men by the train stop near my place are already drinking and loitering in the morning and sometimes i get called baby. i usually ignore them but if i don't i might say 'I'm not a fucking baby' or 'Oh, you like babies, pervert?' |
