Default friend who always brings up popularity when discussing music

I have this friend who always feels the need to bring popularity and success of bands that he likes into our discussions about music. Like he respects artists more if they are somehow able to have a really large fanbase. He feels like a band has proved their worth if they can be mainstream. And he respects artists the most if they have made it big in America. He doesn't consider an artist who hasn't made it in America an actual example of success. It's the type of thinking that I would expect from someone in high school but not someone in his mid thirties. He is so obsessed with status.

Doesn't Fuzzy like obscure Canadian bands that never made it big outside of that country?

Hey CW seeing as we've caught you in a moment of lucidity/actually replying to your own thread:

Why did you make this thread and what did you really think was going to come of it?

I really don't think he is, given that any data recorded from netphoria would be heavily skewed by the unusual sample group.

This assumes he has any idea what he's doing though

Show me any thread you've started on this board not about a popular band.

I'm prepared for that.

I'm also prepared to tell him Tame Impala or Cold War Kids are popular bands.

There are those people that you kinda like, and you hang out together, but when they open their mouth you ask yourself 'why am I friends with this person?' Then you go your way, they go theirs.
A few weeks later you remember that one night in the past, the fun you had, somehow, while you both were drunk and then you forget about the person's opinion on things, then you hang out again, and you start wondering how can you avoid this person forever without hurting their feelings.

But then you forget again, then you hang out again, and there goes 10 years of a healthy social life...

[Wow, this is fun, I'm gonna TEB more.]

They won a Mercury prize so I think that qualifies. I guess maybe they're not that big in the US but they play larger venues (not stadiums but like theatres and shit) when they tour Aus. FWIW I actually think Elbow have a bunch of really great songs.

All the others I guess qualify as pretty popular: National were critical darlings, Weeknd duetted with Ariana Grande on Tonight Show or similar, Police were massive, Tame Impala is huge, etc etc

now that i think of it, he's kind of like banana in that it's like he's picking out the most successful bands from pitchfork's BNM from 5 years ago

well maybe not like that, but that shit was hilarious because it always felt like he thought he was real against the grain and all super cool and hip and whatever

i've never gotten that impression from cat so much as him giving us a glimpse into the glitchy meltdown of a man enthralled with 2010s popular indie & r&b, or alternatively an interactive encyclopedia of the people he would like to murder in the not-so-distant future
