I always thought pennies was super average. I mean an average song in their heyday was still good and I like it still, but I don't feel something particularly special about this song.

It was the best song on that EP anyway (besides Zero). That's what made it stand out.

When you pull up one of these old random B-Sides and YouTube plays some new random SP after it, it's often jarring.

i like lily too. but it's definitely one of the weakest tracks on mcis and a total waste of space when you consider all the bsides that could of replaced it.

Re lily:
By that point in the runtime, nearing the culminating moments of disc 2, the listener NEEDS that warm, oldtimey hum of those mellotron strings vs the yawning guitar tube sounds on the lead, plus the uncharacteristically shambolic drumming....omg lily is perfect you dummies stfu |

lily is great
pennies is great my fave of those modest songs has to be Medellia of the Gray Skies.. to me that's the sweetest of the b-sides. pennies benefits as being the mellow track after all the rockers on the zero single. |

Yeah I have no complaints about Mellon Collie (other than maybe the inclusion of Take Me Down; I always skip that one but it almost feels like it’s not really part of the album). I wouldn’t dump Lily or any of the other tracks for Pennies; though Pennies is also one of my favorites. Medellia as well. If anything, Billy probably should have just packaged up all the TAFH material and released it as a new album; a companion piece to Mellon Collie. I mean, that’s kind of what TAFH was but packaging it the way he did (expensively) and clearly establishing that it was a B-side collection probably kept anyone but hardcore fans from picking it up. Most of the tracks were strong enough that I think he could have just released it as a real album and it would have been another big hit.

Yeah, I know B-sides were a thing back then but he could have just used some old material leftover from the early days for that. I mean, he already had a catalogue of like 150 songs back then. Plus, most of the singles had like five B-sides. You don't really need more than one.

Today was so much better because it had HKK and Obscured on it, for example. I Am One had Starla and Plume. He couldn't have used that old stuff; like, he wasn't going to release 1979 with Spiteface or My Dahlia on the b-side. As people buying them would actually play those songs, rather than them just being there to fill space. It's a shame the 4-song CD single is gone, as it made bands release some of their more interesting material. To wit, all of Pisces and most of TAFH. |

Yeah, true. I still think Starla should have been on Gish. That song is a fucking masterpiece and definitely album-worthy. I would have dumped Window Paine or Daydream for that one, if I had to. I like those songs of course but Starla is amazing.

True, but a lot of it is just that long (albeit awesome) guitar solo and it would've been criticised as such if it was on Gish. A b-side is the perfect place for something like that, and it worked in the context of what Pisces was.
