Default Just tried giving MTAE a re-listen

got 4 tracks in and stopped, god this album sucks
strange piano sound he was going for, doesn't work at all with the guitars/tone

has this grown on anyone?

I think it's pretty bad. I don't think I have ever been able to listen to the album all the way through in a sitting. By far the worst LP that Brillow Corgan has put out

I bought this when it was on sale at HMV.

It's still sitting in its shrink wrap.

The best music Corgan has ever written is sitting in shrink wrap somewhere on Disco King's CD rack.

usually, with repeated re-listens i can find something redeeming in jellybelly's music, but this album has aged like an old banana

It was terrible on release, it's terrible now. Uninspired, plastic, soulless, nothing to say. An album put out by someone going through the motions.

Not enough is said about how horrible the tones are. Sounds like I'm wearing cheap headphones. Anti-Hero sounds like a rehearsal factory band.

I like Tiberius and Drum & Fife. Fuck the rest. Easily the worst Pumpkins album, if you even consider it to be the Pumpkins.

One of the other things about this album is that the songs themselves, whatever we think of the melodies and tones, just don't work as compositions. All of the shifts from verse to chorus, or the use of middle eights come across as awkward, jarring, sometimes cringe-inducing. What happened?

Yeah, I agree. Like, I kinda like that weird "Stranger Things" type intro to Monuments, and the verses are alright. But then that awful "LOVAAAHHH YAWWW STRAANNNNGE" chorus kicks in and ruins the whole fucking thing. Ugh.

Gave it another try a year after its release when I could get it at our city library on CD.
But neither the sound quality was better then what you could hear on the internet nor the songs themselves did improve.

The only song I like from the album is "Drum + Fife". But this one is even more audible to me then "Solara" and "Silvery Sometimes".

Heh yeah. As shitty as this album is, I'd say that both Tiberius and D&F are better songs than Solara and Ghosty Silvertimes.

Exciting times ahead, Pumpkins fans.

except for Chicago Songs, The Future Embrace, Zeitgeist, American Gothic and residency songs, Oceania, Solara and Silvery Sometimes...

the only music project he has ever done which is worse is 2009-2010 era Teargarden

Oceania may have questionable drumming, but it has more interesting songs on it than this album in general.

Honestly it sounds like something my mother would find appealing, just like all pumpkins music post Oceania. It just has this old people trying to imitate female pop star quality.

Marge: "Wow, you can't find this stuff anywhere. Seals and Crofts, Pablo Cruise, Air Supply, oh, Loggins and Oates ... and it's free!"

Lisa: "I've never heard of these bands, Mom, what kind of music do they play?"

Bart: "Crap rock?"

Marge: "No ..."

Homer: "Wuss rock?"

Marge: "That's it!"

I actually find the album pretty good.

I like Tiberius, One and All, Anaise!, Dorian and Anti-Hero. Probably my favorite SP2 release since Zeitgeist... And I like all of the above songs more than Solara and Silvery Sometimes.

It's a good melodic rock effort. Billy and Tommy get a good groove going and it was a breath of fresh air after all of those years with Byrne... Also the production of Monuments is better than anything since the reformation.

I had to Google "MTAE smashing pumpkins" cause I didn't even remember that album existed and my brain didn't recognise the acronym.

That's how good it is.

the fact the he wasn't even trying gives a little honesty to the effort, and I admire that

It hasn't grown on me, in fact my opinion of it hasn't changed at all.

I don't mind Tiberius, Anaise, One and All, and Monuments. That's about it. Run2Me is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Being Beige is not all great but it does have some nice moments (the title is horrific - should just be called "The World's On Fire").

The main issue is the sound. It's grating. And WAY too loud, everything is distorted. Still, not as distorted as Solara and SS (G) - at least the drums sound like a drum kit on MtaE.

I don't really view this as "canon" in the SP oeuvre - it's only SP in name. It's Billy with the drummer of Motley Crue, and some guy. It's not a band. You could argue SD isn't a band either but it came from a band ethos (it started as a band but didn't work out that way). But anyway that's like comparing apples and the houses of parliament.

The cover art is awful too. Just a vague blob.

100% pure garbage.

And I say that as a total fanboy who actually loved Zwan, TFE and a lot of SP2 stuff.

But that record is so relentlessly bad, that Tommy Lee's drumming isn't even the worst part.

I don’t mind it but it’s a 3/5. It’s the most 3/5 record I’ve ever heard. The “nobody believes I made a 3 star record. Nobody!” thing is hilarious because you couldn’t make a more 3 star record if you tried. In fact I strongly believe that he set out to make a 3 star record due to losing his goddamn mind because there’s no way that someone as talented and experienced as Billy with the help of a good producer and T LEE (who is legit) and Jeff the shredder could’ve accidentally made something so perfectly 3 star. Thanks for reading if you got this far

I think it is one of the lions in front of the Art Institute of Chicago. That said, yeah it is not great art.

Dude is clearly obsessed with "breaking into the market" or whatever and this album was meant to try to appeal to a bigger group of people with easily-digestible pop-oriented songs. "Being Beige" was more or less Billy trying to do a Coldplay song.

It failed to grab any non-fans' attention and the songs suck for the already-established fans. There are no guitar solos on the album - that's like the least Pumpkins thing ever. But of course he's mad at us because no one bought it and we're all too dumb to realize that the album was just "a big sugar rush" or whatever.
